SL/R230: What do the Rxxx mean?

2004 SL 500
What do the Rxxx mean?
Hi, I am just curious to find out:

Rxxx (as in R230 for the new SL 500) what does it mean?

It's obviously some product number, but what does the "R" mean and what does the number mean? Is it an internal Mercedes classification? How did it start? Why is it used?

Just curious.

Roadster.

230 is the chassis code.

rest i dont know.

Right on, R means Roadster or whatever, just like most of the sedans or long base cars are W a la W203, W220, and so on.

But then agian, W463 is the G-Wagon..

i'm pretty sure the only chassis designations used are r, w, and cl.
where r is roadster, w is for 4 doors, and cl is for coupes.

You should ask a German why those particular letters are used, probably for some German words, not English!

They don't say CL215, it's still W215 for the CL Coupe.

the official designation is cl215. mbworld is the only place i've seen it as w215.
