Ac Compressor Replacement 03-06 sl500/sl55
I need to replace the AC compressor on my SL55, after removing the belt it seems the compressor has broken internally. The belt pulley spins freely and true but the center shaft can be wobbled around, no high side pressure.
Has anyone here replaced one of these themselves? I realize the procedure would be a little different on the 500 but any insight is appreciated! New compressor is already ordered.

Thanks, I already have WIS, EPC, and a star/sds system. Was wondering if anyone else had DIYed it and had some real world suggestions or tips, especially if working on stand and not a lift!

Thanks groves! That's what I was thinking, and to avoid removing the abc pump (but will pull the pulley off)
Will be working outside in the driveway on ramps and stands so want as much of a game plan in mind before I start tearing it apart.
I still need to replace that expansion valve as well in my ongoing AC saga. After these the entire mechanical side of the AC system is all new except hoses.

you will have to play with the abc pump also but not remove it. it doesnt play well with others. especially the bracket on the back of the pump. you will see the one i am talking about. if you have a question that either of the 2 hoses going to the compressor may have a leak. Replace them with the compressor. i think combined they are $300. You wont want to do this job twice. get those torx wrenches or the low profile sockets that Rudney talks about. Ill say a prayer for you tonight!

Ugh sounds like fun! Thanks again for
all your help I really appreciate it.
i already did make sure to order those max access sockets rudney is always suggesting! Any way I can make this easier I will.
Does anyone have the WIS procedure for the replacement? Or know the document number?
Im digging through it now and just can't seem to find it. I've looked under the 474 and 472 sl55 and 471 sl500/550 with no luck. Only document I can find for the AC comprsssor is the multifunction sensor and replacing the pulley drive

I was able to find document ar83.55-p-5300rmg, which is the compressor replacement on the r230 sl63. Not much applicable to my 474 sl55 other than the paneling R&R. Compressor replacement sounds much easier in that car
edit: dropped the "mg" from that document number and searched which got me the procedure on the sl500 230.475, should be very similar.
Thanks again for the tips on unbolting tandem pump and moving it over, groves! WIS specifies to remove it, I really would rather not open the abc system again as it works great and I seem to have bad luck lately

I’m in the same boat. So on my 05 sl55 amg I’m looking at doing the same thing, replacing the compressor. The bearing went out and blew the pilot off the compressor. So there is one of the mounting bolts for the compressor that sits about a half inch off the frame. So are you suggesting to remove the engine mounts then lift the engine just enough to get to that last bolt?

Loosen the one mount bolt on each side but dont take it all the way out so you dont have realignment problems with the mount bolts. you are only lifting about an inch. If you go higher you should look at clearances and pulling wires. Use caution when lifting engine if you are using a block of wood and floor jack. its an aluminum oil pan. It will take extra time but loosen up the abc pump by removing all its bolts makes the job so much easier.(I think you have to so dont try to do without) The job will take a while but it beats paying shop rate! Good luck.

You don't have to open the abc lines. The pump wont want to stay out of your way but you can move it enough to get the job done. its been a while since I did the job but I think you have to remove the fan shroud and pull the compressor through the front. I think the suspension stops it from coming out the back. But again its been a while. it you do have to come out the front I would put a piece of cardboard over the radiator so the fins don't get damaged. I think it easier to drop the back of the compressor towards the back to remove and attach the hoses
