Replace Command Unit SL500 (R230)
Hi all,
I would like to know if it is possible to retrofit a newer version of the Command in my 2003 SL500 (model 230). Currently, it has the older command version, with navigation, Bose sound system, and 6 CD Changer Magazine.
I am aware that in 2003, a newer version of the command was made available to this car, and was wondering if that can be easily installed, without loosing the CD changer (installed in the back), and also, would like to know if a bluetooth unit can be added to work with the command and the steering wheel buttons.
Thanks

Everything is possible - I have retrofitted the MY2009 system to my 04 SL including HK, DAB, Media Interface, Comfort Phone, etc using all genuine parts
But its *very expensive* and I don't have to pay for my labour on my own car, whereas I assume you'll have to pay someone.
The issues are
a) You have to change the instrument cluster, the wood trim and cup-holder and frame behind dash for the COMAND
b) If going to MY2009 then you have to go to HK and replace all speakers
c) Amp has to change to newer BOSE or HK if going to MY09
d) Antenna system changes, and you'll have to either remove the dashboard to get to amps or compromise
e) You'll need to change trunk left carpet and brackets
And lots of stuff I have forgotten !
So Plutoe's comments not so far wrong.

Why not go for a plug and play android system that looks like the original comand and cost about $300-$700
I have not done this but from what i have read it is a plug and play job and the Android "comand" use the original connectors

Someone on the "other" forum bought an aftermarket Android unit. It plugged into the existing wiring okay, but it bypassed the factory amplifier, and the sound was dreadful. Now they are investing c. $1500 in an aftermarket power amplifier and signal processor in hope of recapturing lost sound quality.

the reason it says that is b/c it fits the center console trim of an 03/04 car not the 05+. there is no plug and play headunit for an 03/04 as they use db2 and not the MOST fiber system like what is found in the 05+. in an 03/04 you must rewire the car and put in an aftermarket amp. In an 05+ you can use a MOST adapter like an OPTI-1 or a headunit that has in built in, which would then be plug and play. the ironic thing is that these headunits all seem to be designed for the 03/04 console trim. if you want to use a plug and play like this I would be willing to swap you my 03/04 style trim and cupholder covers (these must also be switched) for your 05+ trim. I am doing a custom install on my 03 that I need the 05+ trim and it looks like you are wanting a plug in play on your 05+ but need the 03/04 trim. just PM me.

Thanks everybody for all the info given. However, I’m not able to draw any conclusions
I have a Mercedes S500 (1998) with Bose audio system. As far as I know, I have D2B fibre optical system, thus I cannot install a new aftermarket head unit.
i
I bought this one from Ali, which I guess it’s only for MOST cars.
Could I use an adapter or amplifier to plug my D2B cable to this unit?
Sorry if I asked something stupid, after reading so much info in different threads and forums, I’m still quite lost.
Thank you all

Most & d2b are two different languages essentially. You can’t just make an adapter for a MOST conversion box. Your options are replace the stock amp or extend the wires on the factory headunit and hide it somewhere in the car. Then use the aux input on the factory headunit to plug the aftermarket into. You’d only be able to use the steering wheel controls to change volume this way. There was a mythical d2b conversion box that appeared on eBay a couple months back. I posted on the sl55 forum about it. Someone bought one and I think is still waiting to get it from China. Right now it looks like there aren’t any for sale anymore
