NTG1 Head unit firmware version
Hi guys,
On a German forum there’s lots of folks that successfully loaded a (so called) 2018-19 nav maps DvD. Works on their NTG1 without any problem, although Das Haus states everywhere that their recent nav software is incompatible with R230 OEM systems. So, I’m ging to give it a go (talking Europe here).
There might be a glitch. Some Germans say I’ll need a firmware upgrade (my maps are 2004, mind you). Firmware as I understand it is fed via the cd/dvd player in the head unit (not via the map DVD player in the trunk). Step 1 here: what is my current firmware version?
I pulled many service screens via mute-1-3 and I think it is sitting right in front of me on this screen... but I’m too dumb to understand it. Can anyone tell me what version I am running?

Hi Frederick.
The Nav unit in the trunk gets the update not the headunit. Problem is, the Nav sytem bootstrap software might cause to fail the firmware upgrade process, creating a nice black brick.
Knowing that, i requested MB to perform the upgrade and tell you what, i have got a new Nav unit afterwards.
Good luck. (Yes, latest DVDs run without issues)
Cheers, Frank

Hi Frank, to the best of my knowledge (or understanding) you first upgrade the head unit and then the nav, right? And then there’s these German stories that jumping from as low as V4 to V19 posed no problem.m to them. It’s a confusing situation.
Did MB give you a new drive?

No, I updated head unit nor nav system and my unit accepted V19 without issue. I did however have the disc I bought on eBay re-copied. On the first disc there would be interruptions in the route guidance. I do have occasional glitches that I address by resetting the system with a push-to-break microswitch in the center console.

I don't know.... Maybe a previous owner did update the firmware of my 2005. And maybe he/she swapped the original dvd back into the drive and took a more recent dvd with him/her before selling the car.
