Welcome to MBworld!

Can you be more specific concerning the model and year of your car? Thanks!

Have you checked the battery inside the key? I believe it’s an R2032 battery, could be wrong.

The battery os r2025, 2032 will not fit.
If the car opens only when you're close, its probably the battery. When you're close to the car, it opens via IR, that does not require battery at all.

I have no idea. I wasn't there...

The only infrared (IR) operation that does not require a battery is communication between the key and the ignition switch with the key inserted in the switch.

Be wary of any advice given to you by "someone".

The principal avenue of remove communication between the key fob and the locking system is by a radio frequency (RF) signal. There is, in parallel, an infrared (IR) signal which can lock/unlock the car and work the roof and windows.

It seems either the battery in your remote is weak, or the remote is faulty. So try another key and also check the batteries. If you look into the lens of the key and press the lock button you should see a brief pulse of light.
