SL/R230 New Safety Key with no original

2009 SL550

New Safety Key with no original

Hi All,
I'm a new owner of a beautiful 2009 Sl 550.

I bought the car from a dealer but there was only one Keyless Go with no safety key.

How can I get a safety key without having the original from which it can be duplicated? Can I only do this via a (surely) very expense official Benz or is there cheaper way? I would also like to get a back up Keyless Go.

Dealer can supply one. I think it has to be cut in Germany, using your VIN. Dealer will require proof of ownership. Blade shouldn't be too expensive. They can also get you a new entire key, fob and blade, but it will be expensive.

Just called the dealers - a new key is $82 which is not that bad.
But a new Keyless Go is $400, which seems insane to me. I saw some on e-bay, is there a good way to reprogram these for cheaper?

From what I know, you cannot reprogram a wireless key...it has to be virgin.
If you have your original blade, you can get a copy cut at many places. Sounds like it is missing, which means the dealer.

If you want to copy your wireless key, there are places that will take your EIS (Electronic Ignition System) and copy the info to a new key and blade for $145.
Just did this at Luxe Auto in San Diego and got it back in less than a week. New chrome key, new blade, same EIS and old key. I'm set with a backup now.

If you can get the Keyless-Go for only $400, that's cheap. But I'll be you'll find that the $400 is only for the key, which requires programming to your car, so there's additional programming charges.

I've heard people talk about dealers doing the programming for free, that maybe so, but I haven't found ANYONE here in the San Francisco Bay Area that will do that. The total cost of a Keyless-Go (key and programming) is closer to $600.
