Verify transmission fluid level
Verify all software is updated for the transmission control unit.

Re-adapt torque converter and transmission shift points with scan tool.

I would start with the basics. inspect the flex disk and the driveshaft support bearing. i would also remove the transmission mount for inspection -- a very easy job. If all are good, then I would have a look at the engine mounts.

You do not need any tools to reset the transmission re-calibration. The SL class has an adaptable transmission and can relearn your driving habits. All you need to do is turn the ignition to the second click (on, but do not start), the press the gas pedal all the way to the floor, you will feel it pressing the down-kick button, then, while holding the pedal down wait 10 seconds, turn off the ignition, release the pedal, remove the key, open the door. Wait about 2-3 minutes, then start the car and drive it. The car will once again start to learn the shift points based on your driving habits.

firmware update has been published by MB as part of solving vibrations

edit: added proof

Keep in mind that firmware upgrades are made to fix faults and improve the car
Xentry Das is needed (if you have a good system and databases, Chinese Xentry 2020 will NOT work) or Autel 908

I don't suppose you would share that document, would you? Because apart from perhaps having a role during a shift, it is implausible to me that firmware can be the cause of Dave's problem.

Motor and transmission mounts are the first place I look as well. Had the same on our SL600 which turned out to be a rather expensive proposition (on the V12, the engine has to come out)...
