SL/R230: Help 09 SL 550’s, both Silver Arrow. One with 40k miles, one with 67k miles.

2009 SL550
Help 09 SL 550’s, both Silver Arrow. One with 40k miles, one with 67k miles.
The car with 40k miles is $6k more than the one with 67k miles. Is the mileage difference worth the extra money? Both clean car fax. Both good interiors.

I would say yes but ownership and maintenance history play a big part here. For me - a weekend SL driver who maybe puts 3k/yr on the car- that difference is nearly 10 years worth.

2009 SL550
the one with 65k miles has only been serviced at MB dealerships. The one with 40k miles, primarily serviced at MB dealerships but about 5 years of misc service.

Assuming the two are nearly the same WRT condition, maintenance, etc., I'd look at the configurations such as glass roof or metal. You can pull the data cards using the VIN of each car at www.lastvin.com.

Also, the car with 67k miles will be due for some maintenance items, such as a transmission service at around 78k. Check the maintenance records for both for major maintenance actions. Especially that the brake fluid has been flushed within the last two years. That's often overlooked. At the very least, take a good scanner with you at delivery and scan BEFORE purchase. Don't take some generic OBD scanner, but something like an iCarsoft MB V3.0 or a Launch Creader Elite Benz. Get the scanner now -- you WILL be using it.

To me, assuming identical cars, it would not be worth the difference. They are both low mileage, 15 year old cars that will likely be driven a couple thousand miles a year. Maintenance items at this point will be much more age related than mileage related. If you are doing a PPI, have an independent shop do it, not the selling dealer.

I would try to find an independent Mercedes specialist, they will know the potential problem areas. Check date codes on tires, low mileage cars often have aged out tires.

Tires over 6 years old should be replaced due to rot, even if there is plenty of tread left. If not visible from the outside, check the inside of the tire (not the actual inside, but the side facing the car). When I bought my 2004 SL500 from a co-worker in 2017, it only had 50k miles and the tires looked great. Then I got under the car and noticed cracks down to the belts. I replaced them immediately. The tires had been changed once in 13 years.
