SL600 vs 911 Turbo

My odometer recently rolled past the break-in point (it took me over two months) and I thought I'd take it out this morning to get the newpaper and go to the gym. Wouldn't you know it, but as I was passing through the gate to exit my community a 911 passes by. I noticed those wide rear fenders and I suspected that it was a turbo. "Hmmm," I thought. It was 6 AM and to get to the gym I had to take the 56 freeway (a new open stretch perfect for strectching a car's legs). I followed this guy wondering what would happened once we reached the on-ramp. We approach the turn to the freeway entrance and he takes off. I follow and track him. The road is wide open and the rising sun was at our backs. It was a beautiful crisp morning--60 degrees. I finally get the chance to pull up beside him (we both doing about 80 mph) and it should have been clear that I was challenging his manhood, but he did not engage. So, put on the cruise, turned up Usher on the radio, and wondered what would have happened?

For the sort of road you were driving on and the speeds you were up to the 911 and the SL600 were quite evenly matched. The SL600 has more power but much more weight. On a twisty, the 911 would leave the SL600 behind; the lower weight, lower centre of gravity and four wheel drive would prove decisive on the corners.

I expect the 911 driver was probably slightly miffed that you had easily kept up with him. Porsche drivers do not always understand that a 500bhp Mercedes can give them a run for their money.

I own an 04 SL600 and I previously owned an 01 Porsche Turbo. I believe that from a rolling start at 80 mph you would have beaten him. I did the RennTech Stage 3 Engine/Tranny upgrade on my SL when I had 300 miles it in May 2004, so my thinking may be a little off. I have about 5,000 on mine too. They do get faster as the engine "loosens" up.

Your car looks awesome! I highly recommend the RennTech chip upgrade.

I'm on the fence about upgrades. If we decide to keep the car after the lease, then I'm gonna upgrade. I was hoping to get the car from my wife as she was going to get a new car after my CL500 lease is up in two years., but she's starting to like the power. As the CL lease apraoches the end, I'm going to search for an '05, '06 CL600 or CL 65 . I just can't live with the V8. what's the cost on the RennTech chip upgrade?

The cost of the Renntech upgrade it $6,400. You can check it out at renntechmercedes.com. I shipped my car to Newport Beach for the winter and I'll be there Jan 29-31. If you are planning to be up that way, send me an e-mail and I'll let you experience the additional power!
