rough engine 2013 sl550

any one have rough engine problem with SL550 2013 only 1800 miles
only when vehicle first started.
So far timing chain replaced. Noisy secondary cam adjuster
Just want to know if I am the only one that have this problem.
Dealer acknowledge rough engine start and noise.

Thank you for the feed back.

The car was at the dealer for over a week waiting for parts from Germany.
The oil preassure was low at starting and I hope that they fix the rough start.

Yes this engine is louder than my SL500 2004 or 2008 sl550 but the new one has more power. But the the dealer did acknowledge my rough start and they
replaced a sensor the first time and 2nd visit timing chain tensioner.
Noisy secondary cam adjuster. Submit sound file to factory(sound bite)
All the technical from my invoice.
Again thank you for the feed back

I am having the same at 1,200 miles.

Starts fine but then idles roughly. I blame it on that I don't drive it much but seems to be getting worse. I live in South Florida so it can't be because the weather is cold.

I had a "refined" Italian car which everyone said would give me problems.

I would be out of town for a month with the car not being started. Always fired up and be smooth as silk. The SL is turning out to not be as smooth when sitting for a while.

Have your repairs improved the idle?

I've got about 3k miles on my 2013 SL550, and the engine runs smoothly at idle and at speed, but it is NOISY, especially at start up. All kinds of racket coming from the engine compartment. I blame it, in part, on the turbos, but it still seems really noisy. I posted about it several months ago, and a MB mechanic replied that the new engines are noisy. I've not taken it to the dealer to have it looked at.

I have noticed anything in my SL550. Is the engine really loud just outside of the car, or are you saying that it's noticeably loud from inside the car too?

No, not inside. Nice and quiet there. Noticeably noisy when outside the car.

When I test drove the new SL, I noticed that the engine noise (from outside the car) was definitely louder than my 2011 SL.

It sounded like a combination of exhaust "clacking" and maybe noise from the high pressure fuel injector system (direct injection). The exhause noise could be from the turbo connections on the exhaust side of the manifold.

Neither of these new systems were on the 2011 SL. It seems like MB could use to do a bit of refinement on this issue.

Mine has no noise or rough engine start.

I just went out to the garage and started it. Only after opening the hood did I hear the tapping of what I guess are the injectors.

With the hood closed, you could hardly hear the tapping sound over the engine. There was no vibration at all while touching the engine.

Exactly similar for me also. I park my E550 next to the SL in the garage and comparing the two at idle, the E is quieter but not by much. The SL seems to have more obvious mechanical sounds probably from the turbos as others have mentioned. FWIW, my sales guy warned me to only use 93 octane gas as lower grades might affect idle??

I use Shell or Chevron premium as they include Techron. It keeps the engine clean.

I really wish I could use 93 octane. No chance here in Cali.

When I had the CL63 I compared performance characteristics between using 93 octane and 91 octane. There was a huge difference in acceleration performance. But no other differences. Idle was the same.

I know these are different engines, but just a data point.

my '12 cl550 is noisy (at least noisier than my past v8s from benzo) from the outisde. a buddy of mine asked me if it was a diesel. HA! it is however quiet as can be on the inside. and it does not run roughly at all. although there is probably some specific tuning going on between our models, it is the same engine as in your sl class cars. in sum - rough engines are not normal. get it inspected. too much $ spent for that kind of (non)quality.

I know this is a REALLY old thread, but in case it is helpful to anyone in the current day, I had the same problem... my independent mechanic pointed me to the attached advisory, which I copied and gave to my dealer (they had never heard of the problem) and they fixed under warranty. The problem is the SECONDARY TIMING CHAINS which make noise until oil pressure builds. It is an annoyance (not a risk for engine damage) and they fixed it in later engines.

Just unbeliveable, why have any old posts then. Don't we want answers to problems? If there is such upset about thread resurrection then those threads need to be deleted. Yeah lets not have any good help on these forums, right?

you must see sarcasm where there is none. I genuinely LOVE reviving old threads and do it all the time. I’ve been a member for 15 years and was told STFF early on.

I drive a 9 year old car so there’s a lot of wisdom out there for me in old threads.

Even with some misunderstanding, I am glad we are all in agreement! The members of this forum— whether they know it or not — have been of great help to me to understand our two Mercedes and to help in decisions about buying our new one. Stay tuned for photos when the new baby arrives!

I'm very sorry I miss under stood. I have seen others crapped on, and also had others crap on me for reviving old threads. And why not revive them?, especially if you have the solution to the problems or something good to add to them. I fully agree that there is alot of good information in those old threads and it does take a bit of time to find them.
On this site and others I have had people get down right nasty for me doing the thread resurrections.
