My brakes squeak!
Do your brakes squeak?
My brakes (the rear ones) squeak when I am doing a gentle stop at between 5 mph and full stop. If I step hard on the brakes they do not squeak.
I have the standard non-AMG brake package. Maybe that is what the issue is.
I am trying to determine if this is specific to my car or if others with this standard brake package are experiencing this problem.
In any case, I now have to take the car into the dealer to see if they can stop the noise.

yes! just as you describe. my 380sl and 560sl squealed like that, too, back in the 80s. maddening. but now i chalk it up to sl character! let us know what the dealer says as i am making a list of things that need to be reviewed by the dealer and want to knock them all off at once. if possible. nothing urgent, thankfully.

Yep got exactly the same thing. Only once they are warmed up though. Took it to dealer 6 weeks ago but, of course, it wouldn't do it that particular morning. I can't be bothered going back as yet. Maybe I will do though, before roof down weather returns to the UK.

My breaks squeak too, but so do those on our 2009 Audi TT roadster. We reported the problem awhile back to Audi service but they said it was normal. Oh well... I just try to break a little harder now.

there is a bulletin out for this problem. i just returned from the dealer and they performed the required check per the bulletin. basically, the mechanics are instructed to repair or replace the pads if required against standards. they check for proper installation and direction of pads and if found to be within spec, they grease and clean the pads. if they are found to be out of spec, they are replaced - all covered under warranty. no more squeal!!
aside and unrelated to the brake squeal issue, i see some others - like me - were getting an occasional "all meta data lost" in the comand screen on start up. but all operations of the car were normal otherwise. there is a comand software update available to the latest release/version for this problem as well. also covered under warranty, 'natch.
the entire set of fixes today took about 3h in total.

My brakes squeak until they become warm. Both my mechanic (an independent that works on my 280sl also) and a tire/brake shop I've used for years have told me this is normal. Anything they have done is only temporary. It's annoying to have people tell me that my brakes need to be replaced, I just smile and thank them.

In the end, I cancelled the embrace package with internet service. It's too slow to be worth anything. I called MB and they told me it's due to the server being in Germany.
Thread creep??????

The NAV update fixed the "meta data file loss" message but Google maps on the iphone is just 100% easier and better.
I have the Iphone 4S linked to the car and use Pandora with Google maps if needed. Good integration. Not perfect but very good for my needs.

My daughters new Dodge Dart has a better GPS then my Benz. A giant screen too. OTOH, The unit in the SL is much better than what I had in my '08 Z06.
I like going to "Send to Benz" http://mbrace.mbusa.com/send2benz and not having to screw with the GPS in the car.

I just had my 1-year service and also complained about the break squeaking. My SA first said that the noise was normal when I reported it and I had to push to get it looked at. But they still ultimately said that the noise was normal and not covered under warranty so the only improvement would occur if I paid to pay to have the pads replaced. I'm never impressed with the service effort at my dealership (San Francisco Mercedes Benz) so I'm not surprised that nothing got done.

Hi, SL R 231-friends,
I´m from Germany, just for the next 5 weeks staying on Phuket (Thailand) for vacations. So I have time and enjoy your forum. The problem with the "squitchy" brakes (front) is also in Germany - with my SL 350 R231. I read it in the German forum for Mercedes Sl, and also I have the problem. But... not every time, also with slow driving and not permantly. I don´t like to drive to mercedes - they are so high sofisticated here... Do you know what I mean??? It is not a real problem for me - once a week and a little bit noisy.
Best regards
Achim
