This is the interior of my new (to me) SL 550 (R231) how did I wind up with a carbon fiber dash insert and light gray dash ? I didn’t know this color was available without moving up to the AMG cars.

As you you can see, the CF trim option was/is available on the SL450/550. As far as the gray dash goes, that is the way MB used to offer the Crystal Gray interior, which to me, was a beautiful option. Now, they have changed the dark gray trim to black, which I don’t care for.

May you have many thousands of safe, enjoyable miles in your new car.
The carbon fibre interior was not available on non-AMG cars I believe until MY16 or even the facelift but was commonly offered aftermarket either from pulls or companies fabricating it using existing trim kits. These were often high quality and cost as least as much as stock trim.

But that dash looks like what I have..brown dash, not grey? Obviously missing something here.......................also, by showing the trim swatches, are you saying that one can pick now a different color dash..instead of blk or brown?

As far as what anyone can now pick, just go to the MBUSA website and “Build” a new SL. You will see all the interior & exterior color combinations normally available. I say “normally,” as MB has started to VERY QUIETLY, reveal what they call their Designo Manufactur program, where custom interior color combinations can be had, albeit for a hefty price.
Unfortunately, the MBUSA “Build” feature is way behind the times as far as imaging goes. Yo can’t even see the SL with the top down. So, if you really want to have some fun, go to the German MB site: Mercedes-Benz.de It is all in German, but if you fool around a bit, you’ll figure it out. You want to get to the “SL Klasse Konfiguerator.” The imaging there is fantastic. Here are some links:
Note: If you are using an iPad or other tablet, on the German site, they are constantly asking you to turn your tablet from a horizontal position to a vertical for some reason.

Easy to lookup. Simply enter the VIN into datamb.com and you will know what options/colors that car came with exactly...

I believe it is just the lighting. The seats are light gray and the dash is a darker gray. The only interior color that comes with a dash that is brown, is the Ginger Beige/Espresso Brown.
