Cockpit Cover - need one for my new 550SL
Trying to find a cockpit cover for my new 2020 550SL. Had one for my 1986 560 SL (used for 14 years) and one for my 2004 BMW M3 Vert (17 years). Yes I know the top closes in 20 seconds or so but I will be driving my car to the office in the summer as I have my previous verts and like the use of a cockpit cover as it keeps the sun off your interior and dash Anyone know of a source? My office parking is very secure and I’ve never had a problem in 31 years. Really seems to keep the wear down on the dash and interior plus wear on the convertible top mechanics. I only live 15 minutes from the office and that’s a lot of wear in a thousand miles. Cockpit cover on my M3

I regards to a cover like that, have never seen one for a modern SL. There seems to be little value for such a cover on a hardtop convertible. The leather has a UV reflective coating and a closed SL is identical to a sedan, SUV or coupe.

Had not thought of that. However it would save wear and tear on the tops mechanism and after using a cockpit cover for 31 years on various convertibles it’ll just be a hard habit to change. Haha. The BMWs top may go for weeks without being raised due to using the cockpit cover. Without the cover I would have to put the top up and down 2 to 3 times a day. Just trying to extend the life of the mechanics. Don’t know if that’s really a worry in the newer vehicles or not?

I've been putting the top up and down constantly for years, and there's been no issue. The hinges are in need of lubrication, but otherwise it's fine.

I once bought a used ‘66 Corvette with a tonneau cover, similar to this one shown here on a Porsche and I just loved it. There was nothing like driving with only the driver’s seat uncovered and it was so nice to just zip it up when I parked the car. However, such covers require very obtrusive drilling for fasteners, so as much as I would have loved to have another car with a tonneau, I was never willing to mutilate one. I realize that the OP is talking about a cover that would not require any drilling and I believe that a custom trim shop could make him a very nice one for not too great of an expense. I rarely park my SL anywhere outside of my garage, but when I do, I always raise the top.
