SL/R231: You Can Kiss Your Need For Speed Good Bye....

If this is even partially true the freedom to drive as you please is over. Someone tell me this article is a spoof!🙁

For the enthusiast, there will always be tracks and other high speed venues, besides the huge number of side roads that will remain un-automated long after the highways are automated.
I do worry about the future of IC engines, but it does appear that electric cars can be plenty fast (or faster). The battery weight penalty needs to be improved though.

Still a lot of the Autobahn is not speed limited.

The biggest issue for speed has always been dense traffic.

We did a trip in 2015 when I retired & we decided to move to the UK (where our son lives). Australia>New Zealand>USA>Iceland>UK.
In the USA, we started in LA to Vegas to San Diego then all the way up the PCH taking multiple detours inland (Crater Lake, Mt. St Helens, Napa Valley etc etc ) all the way to Whistler (Canada) and back down to Seattle before flying to NYC. Was a fabulous trip ~4 weeks in the USA. PCH is a great drive.
Done several trips to Germany and the AutoBahn (I lived in The Netherlands for 5 years in the late 90s and frequently went to Germany. Had the SL @150mph there in 2017. Problem driving on fast stretches of the AB is that you really need to keep your wits about you. @150mph things happen very quickly and it is not a “relaxing” drive and it is very busy. Best to go on weekends when large lorries are not allowed on AB.

.The EU speed limiter thing has largely been misreported. The traffic sign recognition is simply not reliable enough. They are just making the current traffic sign recognition mandatory along with visual warnings such as the speed limit blinking in the dash when driving faster and the warnings are still allowed to be turned off. There's nothing new here.

The system here will recoginise signs and also use GPS to automatically bring the car under the speed limit posted. HOWEVER, it will be easy to override with kickdown (As per the current manual speed limiter that we have in our cars).
