The Green Party in Germany has been trying for many years to eliminate the no speed limit on the autobahn. It has always failed. That said, I can see the EU pushing forward on this.

Maybe the last regular ICE cars will have one cylinder and the AMG versions two cylinders. What is old is new again!

If you think about a future with self driving cars on highly managed / automated highways, this makes sense as a step in that direction.

For the enthusiast, there will always be tracks and other high speed venues, besides the huge number of side roads that will remain un-automated long after the highways are automated.

I do worry about the future of IC engines, but it does appear that electric cars can be plenty fast (or faster). The battery weight penalty needs to be improved though.

Those auto speed limiters are (IIRC) already being introduced in the EU. However they get overridden in the exactly the same was as the existing manual units.Nothing to worry about.

A large part of the AB is already speed restricted. I think it is only something like 12% that is completely unrestricted.

Correct. There have always been sections of the Autobahn that have restrictions due to congestion, noise and construction. Drive another 10 miles and you are back in unrestricted areas.

The biggest issue for speed has always been dense traffic.

I made that drive about 15 or 20 years ago in a rented Mustang convertible. I still think about it fairly often. Gads, what a nice drive that is...

That is an awesome stretch of road.

We did a trip in 2015 when I retired & we decided to move to the UK (where our son lives). Australia>New Zealand>USA>Iceland>UK.

In the USA, we started in LA to Vegas to San Diego then all the way up the PCH taking multiple detours inland (Crater Lake, Mt. St Helens, Napa Valley etc etc ) all the way to Whistler (Canada) and back down to Seattle before flying to NYC. Was a fabulous trip ~4 weeks in the USA. PCH is a great drive.

Done several trips to Germany and the AutoBahn (I lived in The Netherlands for 5 years in the late 90s and frequently went to Germany. Had the SL @150mph there in 2017. Problem driving on fast stretches of the AB is that you really need to keep your wits about you. @150mph things happen very quickly and it is not a “relaxing” drive and it is very busy. Best to go on weekends when large lorries are not allowed on AB.

It's no wonder used car prices are so inflated. Our X5 is almost worth what we paid for it 2 years ago after a 10% discount and $4500 in rebates. Crazy times.

My dealer also shared that the G-wagen is significantly impacted by the lack of V8's. They had one in inventory, and are asking $50K over MSRP!!!!!

On the left lane no less with nobody on the right .

The EU speed limiter thing has largely been misreported. The traffic sign recognition is simply not reliable enough. They are just making the current traffic sign recognition mandatory along with visual warnings such as the speed limit blinking in the dash when driving faster and the warnings are still allowed to be turned off. There's nothing new here.

Will be different this side of the pond then.

The system here will recoginise signs and also use GPS to automatically bring the car under the speed limit posted. HOWEVER, it will be easy to override with kickdown (As per the current manual speed limiter that we have in our cars).

"On the left lane no less with nobody on the right .” and taking a photo while driving ?

I think the concern in the future is with all the electronics now being installed on modern vehicles your speed could be limited by a outside source by way of satellite connection.

50 is nothing. 60-100K over is becoming the norm.
