Trunk Lid Hydraulic Line Leaks

I noticed drops of oil on the driver's side hinges in the trunk. Then I start looking for where it came from. Fast forward--> It appears one of the little hydraulic lines is kinked and split. Not sure how this would happen, but as I allow the lid to close, but right before it closes, I see hydraulic fluid squirt out. I'll post some pics, but now wondering where to get new lines. they look like the hand-brake cables on a bicycle. I've searched the forums, but haven't found any discussion on this.

LOL Pictures help. now that you posted them.
I'm not sure what answers you're looking for. You answered your own question.
Looks like one of your lines is kinked.(and leaking) Perhaps from a previous repair? Or the line hit something in the trunk on closing.
You should have the WIS and EPC as part of your laptop with XENTRY. Pretty straight forward.
I would replace that line, maybe both if they look suspect.

Good Luck

This is the part you're looking for (at least the lines off of it.)
Reference that part number in your EPC (see if the lines are attached to it or in the same diagram)

I looked for the part in the EPC and could not find it. Then I went to mbparts.mbusa.com and almost threw up when I saw the price of a new top (~$35,000 depending on the color). I'm sure the dealer is going to tell me I need a new trunk lid assembly ($18,000) and a new top ($35,000). 😱

I'm actually talking to a company Top Hydraulics that does a lot of work on Mercedes tops. Apparently, they build a custom line set a couple months ago for someone with the same problem.

lines look to be part of assy as pictured in the eBay listing. EPC pictures are not always correct. (But you better make sure)

Thanks. See? I knew you'd come through. Of course, entering that part number on mbparts shows only the lift cylinder. I will search for it in the EPC and see what comes up.

Two interesting observations:
  1. It does not squirt if I manually close the trunk. I will need to put some paper towels down to see if anything squirts upon opening.
  2. The right side appears to have previously been replaced. Routing of the lines seem to be smoother and the cable ties are not trimmed as neatly as they would be from the factory.

UPDATE

Thanks to the hard work and diligent efforts of @crconsulting I was able to identify the hydraulic lines needing replacement. The part number is 2318002115 and they run about $120 through various online parts places. However, I will now have an opportunity to try out the 3rd party extended warranty (actually, a Vehicle Service Contract) from Endurance that I got for the car. I'll let you know how that goes.

I have the same problem on my 2013 SL63. I replaced the hose but after a few days, it kinked again. Trying to figure that out now.

It will squirt only if you close it by pushing the red button. It will not if you close the trunk by pushing it down manually. It will not squirt upon opening since the hydraulic line is not pressurized at that point. It's only pressurized when you close by pushing the red button.

I had the same issue with my SL. It was a $1000 repair at the dealer.

Can you post a picture of the area where it was kinked, after the repair. My mechanic replaced both left and right for less than $600.

That's the difference between using an Indy and a stealer. Previous photos show the area that was leaking. There was no kink.

Jetta

Your "strain reliefs" are not positioned correctly.

If the "strain reliefs" were properly installed (should be located where the bend occurs) you would not have a kinked line and no leak.

I just checked mine and my plastic segmented strain reliefs (just like yours) ARE installed correctly.

So.....I would say you have a complaint even if out of warranty that MB should cover.

Others should check their lines and if the strain reliefs are not correctly positioned (should go over the lines where the bend occurs) they should be fixed by owner or by MB

Any updates?

Hello everyone,
Are there any updates from the people that got the problem fixed?
Has anyone fixed the problem themselves? After replacing the hose, I expect you would need to fill the system again with fluid.

I have a 2013 SL63 with the same issue and I’d like to take a crack at fixing it myself before taking it to the deal.

That sucks, but I'm glad that you caught it. I'm gonna check mine today, but I haven't noticed anything strange when I was wiping mine down yesterday. I see this was an old thread, but good to know what to keep an eye out for..

You probably can, but it is labor intensive. I had the dealer do it because I have a service contract with Endurance that covered it. My out-of-pocket was $100 (that's less than the price of the part). The invoice was over $1000.

In addition to replacing the line, the system had to be bled of air, etc.

Good luck

Interesting, but the repaired line does not have the strain relief. Both were removed.

Driver's side (repaired)

Correction, the ones on the other side (right/passenger) do have strain reliefs. I may have to discuss this with the service advisor the next time I go to the dealer.

Passenger side.

Thank you very much for sharing this. I will go ahead and have the dealer fix it. I have oil leaking on both the passenger and driver sides, and I do not have those strain reliefs on either side.

I'll keep everyone posted when I have an update.

I went ahead and ordered the strain reliefs (radius limiters officially). They are only a couple of dollars each. I’ll post the part number when I get home.
