Don't let them off so easy. JLR, with a fraction of the resources, debuted the equally iconic (and complex, and at the same pricepoint) all-new Range Rover the same week as the SL. The website configurator was simultaneously available with pricing, and dealers were able to take orders that week. US deliveries started a few weeks ago.

This SL introduction has been *** backwards. That Daimler/MBNA may have done something similar in the past is no excuse.

In the USA different rules apply to passengers cars vs. trucks/SUVs. The latter has far less stringent emissions requirements etc. JLR also didn't try to cheat in the past. The Germans are undergoing extra scrutiny.

^ All passenger vehicles go through the same process, regardless of the emission levels they are required to comply with. And the RR has a BMW engine, so it's German from an emissions standpoint if you really believe German vehicles have a different testing procedure.

And none of that explains why JLR was able to get their website up with pricing the day of debut, and in the US we still don't have either for the SL six months later.

Somewhat futile going down this rabbit hole. JLR is not MB and vice versa. Who knows what JLR did differently. I agree with you, though. MBUSA has been terrible with updating their website. First world problems really. Right now is about the worst time to buy a new car.

For what its' worth, in 2019 my C43 was held up for a while at the dock for "certification"....and that was before we learned about "supply chains".

If they start releasing SLs from the factory in June, it may be August or later before they begin arriving in Brunswick, GA. At this point, Mercedes should start calling them 2023 models.

If it becomes this late they should totally call them 2023. When they released the AMG GTS in early 2015 they were released as 2016 models - why not here.

Mercedes used to do that a lot - the AMG GT, the 2017 E Class, and the big one was the 2020 GLE with non pilot builds starting in 2018 and sales starting March 2019. But other models have been different. Iirc, the 2014 S Class hit dealers early to mid 2014 and it wasn't long before 2015s came out. But recently, MB has been dropping the ball with this. The 2021 S Class sat at the VPC so long that many 2022s were built before 2021s were released, and now we have the 2022 C Class, EQB, and SL all waiting for release.

Here’s your reason:

https://nepis.epa.gov/Exe/ZyPDF.cgi?Dockey=P1013NR8.pdf

“The projected fleet targets under the final rule increase in stringency in MY 2023 by about 10 percent (from the existing standards in MY 2022)”

Fwiw as a data point, my 63S has a production date of 5/3/22 (as in tomorrow) and has a VIN. No dealer ETA on the sheet but I'm guessing a couple of months from production making it a July delivery if EPA isn't a thing.

Alpine Grey, ceramics, black wheels/top/interior.

Wife's SL55 was built over a week ago. Looks like it is being held in Germany; it is not showing as waiting for a ship.

I don't think a single car has been delivered in Germany or elsewhere otherwise it would already be up for sale on mobile.de, largest new/used car marketplace in Europe.

Is it there still? I may need to make the 1.5 hr drive to see it. And I agree, that red is hideous.

I wouldn't take the red top with a black SL but the yellow caliper with red makes for a bad combo. Red calipers, OK

I like the red with the black but agree that the yellow calipers don't help. In my opinion, black is the least desirable color for this generation, every other color looks much better and shows off the lines and curves of the design.
