Intrusive Thoughts Won

Hey folks!

A good 3 years ago I sold my E63s wagon unicorn after an incredible 3.5 years and got a half ton "fancy" pickup truck. I don't know, the warrant was about to run out, and I was assimilating not the Midwest Suburban dad I guess. I found solace in a '21 GLE63s that was my wife's but was still a Mercedes in the garage. Well, 6 weeks ago the GLE went to a new home as she got a bigger 3 row Range Rover as we needed the extra seats. I admit after 11 years of Mercedes ownership I felt kind of sad. I ended up spotting this lower mileage '23 SL63 that was aggressively priced. I ended up giving in to the intrusive thoughts and yesterday drove her home.

I had been cross shopping with 911 but that market is bonkers. Think asking above MSRP for 4-5 year old Turbo/Turbo S which is a pretty penny in a vacuum let alone at nearly $90 to $100k above an SL63 and I couldn't justify it. I can't say I'm mad about having a Benz back in the garage. The rear seats are fantastic for our 7 and 4 year olds with ample space for Isofix'd boosters. I programmed the drive seat for two positions, one when I have no-one in the back, and two when one of the kids is right behind me. A little closer to the front to give them some leg room and the steering wheel pushed against the dash. Very manageable. Although my super tall 7 year old can probably touch the roof with his head if he's fully stretching with top down. With that, as he is growing taller he'll eventually not need the booster and should get a few extra inches of head room.

The car itself drove fantastic although does feel every bit as heavy as the stated 4,200 lbs. Relatively loaded with Performance Trim and Aerodynamic Package. It is missing carbon ceramics unfortunately (AMG brake dust) and I wish it had one of the 21" wheels. The wheels I intend to eventually upgrade. I still need a bit of time to finish figuring out the infotainment system and dial in the Bermeister 3D. The giant screen isn't as bad as I thought it was gonna be and I guess is the way of the future? My wife's Range Rover is all screen too and so is my Ram truck although climate control hard buttons are there.

I did spend a lot of time on this forum learning about the battery nightmares. I have a CTEK charger on order and will likely invest in a compact jump starter for the truck so I don't get stranded in the country.

Just wanted to get back into MBWORLD and say hi to fellow owners here.

Happy Easter!

Nice car, and in this case, your intrusive thoughts led you in the right direction!

Thanks guys. I’m just realizing the monumental amount of typos in my OP. Good grief. I guess exited fingers are fat fingers. I got around 150 miles in 3 days. This morning did a 6 am run to the grocery store just to drive it. I know I’m in the honeymoon phase but I am really liking this little rocket.

Congratulations! I have a very, very similar car and have been nothing but pleased. Yes, it had some annoyances at the beginning, but the battery tender and recalls have fixed everything for me, I also have been keeping an eye open for an E63 wagon . . . That’s another story. Hit me up if you are interested in the AMG 21” black wheels (5k miles), I have these same wheels:

Congrats on the car, I am sure you will LOVE it— KH

they left their info under the windshield wiper. He was apologetic. My god. It’s been a crappy 3 hours. Filing insurance claim. Police report. Insurance roadside wanted to toe it to local no name shop and I declined wanting it towed to dealership body shop and they wanted me to pay $2 grand. I declined and called Mercedes roadside and they stepped up and had it towed without charge. I know it’s “stuff” and no one got hurt but it’s very frustrating I haven’t had it for 2 weeks even 😩

Pickup truck. I suspect he got on his driver side if he was parked like me facing out, then turned to my car “exit direction” and went for it. I don’t think he realized a little roadster was there.

It’s at the body shop. I can’t imagine a quick turn around which sucks doubly because there’s so many months of the year I can get away driving it before the snow comes. I keep taking deep breaths and tell myself it could have been way worse but the little Neanderthal bit of my brain takes over every now and then and I get pissed.

back from the shop yesterday. Replaced bumper and repainted fender. Replaced one headlight but for some reason the intact one is fogging up hard core in the rain which they submitted for a warranty replacement. Got home and found the new replaced headlight also fogging up but less so. Anyone run into this issue before?

Some condensation is common on MBs I wouldn't say normal but shouldn't affect the functionality but the one that is fogging so bad clearly has a broken seal.

Thanks that makes sense now that I'm thinking about it. The body shop is Mercedes dealer so they just called service and had them order a new headlight under warranty. I wonder if the seal broke in the initial impact that dislodged the bumper and was missed in the damage inspection. Either way they aren't charging me for anything. I think I'm just gonna be a bit antsy until I know there aren't any missed gremlins. The did a very nice job repairing and repainting the damaged bits. Those cars are so stinking complicated though and I imagine easy to mis something.

That is not impossible, I say that might indeed be the case.

Glad to hear you got the car back now, again, sorry that you have to deal with this OP : (

Only if it’s unforecast, and you can’t make it back to your garage.

Drove back up north for another week of work. This time left the SL back home tucked in the garage and took my old faithful ‘14 stingray. I come out yesterday to this:

Same Sheraton parking ramp. A couple stalls where my AMG got hit. Between the lines. No note on this one. I’m starting to be one of those people that go “why me?!?!?!?”.

This Corvette I’ve had for 11 years. 10 Minnesota winters on snow tires. Several track days and 32,000 miles and not one incident.

Estimate to repaint is $1,800 so I’ll eat it since my deductible is a grand but my goodness are people just blind? Next time I think maybe I’ll fly in and uber.

After the initial incident I went and installed dash cams in all the cars. Bummed it didn’t trigger for this but found the “Parking Mode” G meter was set to medium so I changed it to high. 🤬

That REALLY sucks. Not for nothing, but if I ever park in a public or business parking lot, I always park the farthest away that I can get. Then, I make sure I get a spot where at least 1 side of my car is to the curb, so if I get damaged on the curb side, I made them work for it, and hopefully did more damage to my car than theirs. Occasionally, I can get a spot that is protected on both sides. I never try to find 2 parking spaces up front, then take them both up. I think I am asking for an expert keying job if I ever did something like that.
