Turbo timers? Idle before shut down on SL65?

I'm considering upgrading my SL55 for a SL65 since I've been offered $100k for my 55. I'm just wondering about the turbos and if you need to idle before shut down or if the cars come with turbo timers. I know this is a consideration for all turbos and was wondering how MB addressed the issue on the 65s. Thanks in advance for any input!

Nope. AMG took care of it using strong (reliable) turbos.

I remember this was asked before in the Tech forum, basically on our cars where we aren't running massive boost, and the fact that we don't really 'stress' the engine, it's not a big issue.

If you run the car hard, you need to let it idle for a bit to be on the safe side.

That's what he's asking.
We do have timers that are automatically initiated from what I remember.

If no one gives a firm response, it might be best to ask the dealer.
I do remember having a few 600's sit there 'on' while the cars themselves were off.

Thanks guys... I hope Treynor can chime in here because I'm also considering the ECU upgrade and I imagine that the ECU changes will run the turbos harder. I can't imagine sitting at a gas station and idling for 2+mins with 20 people waiting to get gas because the price is 20 cents cheaper lol!

Generally this is only a concern if you are running the car hard and then immediately shutting down. The issue is that the turbo shaft bearings get very hot with prolonged use, and they need some oil circulation to cool off. This is much less of an issue to begin with in our cars because they use synthetic oil and IIRC water-cooled turbos, and I've never heard of a modern car cooking its turbo bearing to begin with.

Skip the turbo timer.

Turbo Timer,,... no you don't need one for a Mercedes... Plus you have 4 years warranty plus what ever extended you gonna buy ...

comparing to those with only 1 year... warranty.... they will be more worry about it.....

Timers

I only ask because I was looking for information on the 997 TT / 996 TT with mods and people on the Renn forums was discussing Turbo timers and that they were a necessity. I have no idea since this would be my first turbo based car.

On a side note I was given a 65 to take out for a few hours last night; wow, what a car. I don't know if it's the fact that my SL55 is getting older and worn in but the 65 felt tighter, more refined and so smooth. As much as I love the exhaust note of the 55 I think the tone of the 65 is perfectly suited to the beast.

I do miss a stick shift... sigh. Thanks for answering my questions.

My lowly E320 CDI diesel gets a cooldown idle

Yes you should let the turbo cool down, but not always.

Even in light use it can exceed 100,000 PRM's.

Just "coast in"....drive gently for the final leg of your trip.

Only time you really need a dedicated cool down is, for example, pulling into a rest area after travelling 75 MPH consistently.

LOL lowly E320 CDI

LOL... not lowly by any means. My wife and I commute quite a bit and the E320 CDI is not only a beautiful work of art but also a great piece of engineering. I'm stupid for not picking it up and getting an X5 instead.
