Not worth the money!

I was at PRI in Orlando and was discussing racing braking systems with Brembo management and you can buy 6 piston mono block calipers on a 14 or 15 inch cross slotted floating rotors for $7k. If you were not using slicks, you would constantly be activating the ABS!

Supposedly the parts replacement cost for the four ceramic rotors is $30K USD -- but since the ceramic rotors don't use the same friction wear-off material method that metal rotors utilize, one would theoretically never wear out one's ceramic rotors (or it would at least take 100K miles or more to do). So all of the clamber about the brake job on an SLR is spurious -- an SLR owner (or second or third or fourth owner) will probably NEVER have to replace the rotors as they will never wear out.... A few people have had to repalce their rotors (on other makes) already due to cracking and/or warping -- but this is a manufacturing defect/warranty issue. There is still debate among ceramic-rotored car owners (some other cars now have them as an option also) about how often the pads will need to be replaced -- but no one I know has had to replace theirs yet. In ceramic rotor systems the heat is transferred without appreciable friction or material wear -- so rotor (and pad?) wear is practically non-existant.

I heard the same thing from my dealer. He said it was so high because the rotors get replaced. The SLR utilizes essentially the same 8 piston caliper as on the other 55K cars so the pads cant be much different except maybe for material. Unless the pads are made of solid Gold, theres no way they cost that much on their own.

I love Brembo's and put em on just about everything I own - btw they are the oem for most european high-end cars (if not all). The ceramic thing is new technology, from F1, and so alot of us and alot of supercar manufacturers are giving them a try. The pads are a completely different material, and shouldn't wear much either..but that is still to be seen. The cost is the rotors.

The calipers are made by brembo. The rotors are like $13k each. The pads are around $7k.

What's your take on the pad wear question?
