Trunk Lids
Another difference between SL/SL55 destined for the US is the shape of the licence plate cut out in the trunk lid, so an easy way to tell where the car was originally destined for. Here are two examples.

That was the one on ebay, here's the one seen in HK. Licence plates are wider in Europe, so a European car with a US licence plate will look odd and you don't want to even think about replacing the trunk lid in addition to all the other things you need to do to convert to US spec.

You dont have to change the whole trunk lid, the number plate surround is detachable, you just get the correct one and spray it the correct colour ...

Sounds sensible - you don't want to pay for the tooling for multiple different trunk lids each time some fool government thinks it's a neat idea to do something different.
