this has been discussed too many times already...once more
the SL55 has and always had 500+ HP...it comes with a 155mph limiter on it or you can option to have it changed to 186mph...end of story

The 493 vs 500 is US HP vs European HP (differerent measurements).
AMG are claiming that all SL55s always had 500hp, it is only the certification documentation that said different. However, this does not tie in quite because one of the guys on this board had an early SL55 and it didnt have 500bhp.
The km/h speedo's seem to be 300km/h, the mp/h ones are 200mph, and cars by default are limited to 155mph.
In germany you can order the "derestricted" option, which gives you a 330kmh speedo, and 186mph and Y rated tyres.
In UK you cant order that, but you have a 200mph speedo, and my car came with Y rated Pirelli P-Zero Rossos. 200mph = 320kmh
AMG have an item on their price list for changing to the 330kmh speedo and 186mph derestriction subject to tyres, and "government inspection" (which is not needed for UK), for around Euro2500 (about 2500 dollars) - I imagine a lot of that is the speedometer.
I havent yet found out how much they will charge to change a UK spec car, since speedo doesnt need changing, and no certifcation - my UK dealer told me it would be free - but Id have to go to AMG in Stutgart, I havent explored that further with him.
Cheers

If you have an early SL 55 that was rated 476 bhp, you can have your dealer see that its registration papers are changed. The only thing that will change in the car will probably be yearly taxes and insurance rate!

C-Class
in a german magazine they had a dyno test of the SL55. tested was the "older" version with 476hp.
the bosch preformance tester told, it has ~490hp and 750nm torque instead of 476hp and and only 700nm
so i won´t worry about the power of this V8 kompressor engine, ask a owner how he is thinking about this.

I have just spoken to a Roland at AMG. I have just received my collection date (25th Sept) - no sleep for three weeks
I was planning to go straight from Bremen to AMG to have the 186mph derestriction done.
Price is 2150 euros. I felt it may be cheaper without the need for the speedo (as stated by Richard earlier).
Two problems - One the price is the same anyway, and the second is they will not carry out the work until the car has been registered in the UK.
Shame it would have been easier to have the work done whilst in europe.
So if I am honest I would have probably only have had chance to use it on a few occasions - combination of price and hassle will probably preclude me from having the job done.
Got 19 days to go, got 19 days to go, got 19 days to go.........
