Amusing - dyno results for RENNtech SL65
As part of my ongoing modifications for my '05 SL65, I had RENNtech's exhaust system installed at Euroelites this past week. We ran into a curious problem while dyno'ing the car, however - on the dyno it appeared to lose power right at its torque peak. Euroelites techs spent over a week chasing the various possible sources of the problem (bad gas? faulty pressure sensors? intercooler malfunction? ECU programming reset by dealer?) without charging me a cent before finally, along with Hartmut, diagnosing the real culprit:
WHEELSPIN ON THE DYNO at ~800 RWTQ
In retrospect, I should have realized that was the problem - the behavior was similar to what I had seen on my uber-Viper back in 2003. However, it didn't occur to me that the SL is now making as much RWTQ as my supercharged Viper until after the fact.
Regardless, without an immediate solution to the dyno dilemma, it's not possible to tell whether the exhaust made any power. However, I *can* say that it looks great and sounds mean, and it's a great addition to my car

That is alot of lbft your making, other then the exhaust what else did you do on top of what you already had done to get to that 800lbft. If you are getting those kind of #'s from the ecu, airbox, and exhaust that is carzy.

I can't wait to add the RENNtech throttle bodies to the mix. Oh, and perhaps 300 lbs of sandbags in the trunk for the dyno session

ECU, airbox, intercooler, exhaust, and 100 octane unleaded. No new reliable WHP figures yet because of the wheelspin issue, but *with* wheelspin it made 581 RWHP and 792 RWTQ after we added the exhaust.

Can you go into detail what the intercooler is? I just dont know if you mean a set up like the evo pkg or the pump upgrade. If I give you car a 20% DT loss that gives the car 725hp and 998lbft at the crank which is just crazy. Is your ecu tuned for 100 or do you have a 91 tune and just add the 100 and drive it around and let the ecu change on its own?
The ECU is also RENNtech's, and drives just fine on 91 octane but will recalibrate over a short time to perform much better when I fill it with 100 octane.
The results are indeed pretty amazing. I'll get a video/sound clip as soon as the weather dries out around here. It sounds *sweet* outside the car, but is no louder than stock inside the car.

I was at Euroelites right as that exhaust was finished. That car is truly a beast. I am proud to say that I was the first person to hear it and it sounded great, not too loud but really aggressive sounding. Nice license plate too.

Very happy to hear you like the exhaust. Our techs say it's truly an honor to work on monsters such as yours. As soon as we get the tire pieces out of our eyes, we'll have the sound clips available.

05 SL 55 AMG, 01 Turbusa/8.43 @ 183..1/4 mi.
800+ Ft. Lbs./Torque is more than my SL55 (520) and my '01 Turbo-Hayabusa (303) combined...............
That is *****-O-Torque, IMO.
