Question Re Automatic Transmission

I am not sure I understand the "Manual C/S" Button and the different automatic transmission modes. Where should I set it for daily city driving. I am thinking S is the standard setting but it doesn't want to upshift here. I've read the manual and I am still not clear. Maybe someone can provide a brief plain-English explanation. Thanks.

M=Manual...............shift up/down with paddles on back of steering wheel.

C=Comfort...............starts off in 2nd gear and shift points are set much lower for around-town easy driving.

S=Sport.......all 5 gears in use and shift points can go to redline depending upon your use of the throttle.

My '05 shifts up easily in Sport mode, you need to clarify what "doesn't want to upshift here" means.

For example, the display shows a C for comfort mode or S for sport mode on the right and on the left will show a number representing the gear. Other times the left display will just read D for drive. When it reads D, it seems to up and downshift like I am used to in an automatic. But when it shows a number, it revs really high before shifting. I haven't selected Manual so it should shift on its own, I thought. I am curious why when it is in S or C mode, it would display a gear number and not just D. I thought it would only show a gear number in Manual mode.

If you use the paddles then it will not shift until reving way up. It expects you to shift. The numbers only show in my car if the paddles get used or I choose Manual.

if you see the gear number then it is because you either hit the paddles behind the steering wheel, or you moved the shifter left or right.

Obviously if you manually select a gear (whether you are in C or S) it will rev it out to the top and then shift... if you want automatic then leave it in D (by moving the shifter to the right a couple of times, or just holding it there...)

This is how speedshift/tiptronic/whatever works in all cars for the most part... nothing new?? is this your first car w/ that feature?

In M (manual) mode... it might not even shift for you at all and you will redline.
I know that my friends '06 redlines in Manual and bounces off the rev limiter in M mode. My '04 shifts for me however in M.

Thanks for the tips. Yes, this is my first car with this feature. I've always had SUVs.

SL55 Shifting

If you see a number while in "S" mode on the display
you have touched the down paddle shift while steering.
Not that unusual for a newbie. Its the one on the left you are hitting in error.
With a little practice you can avoid doing this. No big deal.

don't toss the baby out with the bath, though. It's useful to specify the top gear this way when you want to keep it revving decently for torque availability.

Thanks for the replies. I think I got it. I must have been unintentionally hitting the steering wheel shifters.
