What does the the above, average and below translate to?

I'm trading my E55 for a 2005 SL65 black/black 10,500 loaded (no distronic) CPO and I'm trying to guess what the dealer is making.

above, average, and below are the condition of the car interior/exterior everything. Dealer is going to make off like a bandit....if he can find someone to buy it quickly...see the 2007 w/3K miles? Hop on EBAY it appears that car is in dallas and being offered at around 145K....the dealer paid 125K. You have to understand that a wholesaler paid 125K more than likely and then sold it to a dealer for 128ish who then probably paid for it with a line of credit...not cash... which incurs interest after every month. So they have to have a huge markup to cover themselves incase it doesn't sell which in some cases is 1 year +....trust me I've see it on some murcielago's and SLR's. Matter of fact there's an SL55 here in houston at EXPO motorcars that I know for a fact was bought in the high 70's by the dealer and is now for sale for 62.5K I believe, the market turns downwards fast on these cars. Im a wholesaler myself, dealers use independents so theyre not trapped with hiring some guy who doesn't know what he's doing and he ends up buying bad cars for them. With independents dealers have the flexibility to say no, but then again some dealers have an in-house buyer, but fyi you're gonna pay a big big markup, but if you get lucky and get in on a car immediately when it arrives they'd probably let you have a nice deal. Good luck and if you need help pm me

Thank you for the insight. There is never a really good deal with a dealer. I looked at the Ebay car and noticed the Buy-Back feature. If they are the same then that explains the price, but not the "above" rating. Mine came in on trade Monday so the dealer is pushing to close the deal, but they had to replace the front seat frame and cover due to a defect, two rear tires and the rest of the CPO process. I notice that when this dealer gets high end trades they sell the car for maybe two weeks using ebay/autotrader and then off it goes to auction. It must be those high interest payments. I know my business credit line is 9% so I don't like using it either.

You have to actually take a look at the car. Typically, "below" means the car is a lemon lawed. That is especially the case with cars from the Riverside auctions; Mercedes Benz North America sells approximately 50+ units that are lemon lawed through Riverside each month.

Danny is right, dealers take a huge risk on 2006+ model year cars, hence, the big markup. If the cars don't sell immediately, they will be bleeding money each month.

I'm currently sitting on a 2006 CLS55 that I can't even sell for a loss. Car industry isn't for the weak of heart.

What would it take for someone like me to get an account to the auctions? Will I be able to access a local auction around my area? To check prices and whatnot?

very true the car industry is like playing roulette in vegas, its a huge rush and you have a big shot at making big money but at any moment you can string together a few cars you lose money on and boom your down 50K. That's why I am glad to be in the wolesale sector, I typically move cars around in less than 3-4 days. I actually know a dealer firsthand in houston that lost about 70K on an SLR last year, its just brutal at time

Not knowing what you are paying for the sl65 and what you are getting for the e55 I would guess the dealer is makinglots of money. I would have the same guess if I knew the figures.

Besides re-sale value, what's the down-side to a lemon-lawed vehicle, assuming repairs were performed satisfactorily by MB, and the car is still under warranty?

honestly if your going to keep it and not worry about resale value? Nothing bc basically they took everything that was wrong with the car and replaced it. The car is brand spankin new.

Most of the time, lemon-lawed cars are not covered by the factory warranty. At the auction, the winner of lemon-lawed cars has to sign a disclosure regarding the warranty and condition of the car.

The lemon-laws in CA favor the customers, so what's happening is that these cars are being purchased by out-of-state dealers which don't have the same stringent lemon-laws. They can then get the car retitled as a clear title, usually by having a friendly franchise dealer service the car.

As such, lemon-lawed cars doesn't necessarily mean it's a "bad" car. You really need to know the service history to make any conclusion. Bottom line, buying a branded title car is subject to financing, insurance and warranty problems.

Not in NY. There is no way to get the brand off the title EVER. Taking it to the dealer won't do a thing. The title is branded through the DMV and they are the only place that "could" change it but they won't change it EVER.

I myself used todeal in branded title cars 15 years ago. I also have a friend now who deals in strickly Mercedes branded title cars. All the cars he sells have full factory warranty. Some were even out of warranty when they were lemoned so they now gwt a 12k mile or 1 year warranty on the part that made benz lemon the car.

Fact is you are correct about lemon laws favoring the customer in CA. ALL the cars my friend sells come out of CA. The customer can force mercedes to buy back a car if they can't get it repaired in less than 30 days. Most of the cars my friend sells don't even have what seemed to be a problem in the first place.

I am surprised a company the size of mercedes has not greased the right hands in CA to get the lemon laws changed.

The last really nice car my budy had was a CL600 with the top Brabus package on it, the whole package including bigger turbos. Mercedes bought this car back it was an 04 they als paid the owner for the cost of the Brabus kit too. My buddy had this car for sale at 40k with less than 25k on the speedo.

He has been trying me to get a 65 from him but I don't want a car with a branded title because I know how hard it is to get rid of a branded car now.

Good Thread!

Nice to see auction pricing w/ explanations!

At this rate of depreciation, an 07 SL 55 maybe a buy if they really come out with an SL63 and updated body work in a year. I think the 07 w/ more interior color combos, paddle shift, etc is the way to go but can't see buying new...

Danny, any auction pricing on SL55's?

Cheers-

voila...

here you go on SL55 pricing....my SL55 i personally got in may its an '04 w/ 22K miles blk,blk push button starter, distronic, ABC 132K Sticker....for 64K....yea and the sad thing is the owner probably paid over bc I was looking an old dupont registry from november '02...there were 2 '03 SL55 1 silver for 175K OBO and 1 red one for 190K....if you have a bunh of old duponts like I do its the one with the SPyker on the cover. Anyways here are the auction prices recently for SL55's......enjoy!

PS: there were no '07s on manheim for me to look for you....its getting tough to sell the '07's the body style is getting old and people look at the car and see the depreciation it takes in 1 year and they pass now. I was offered a brand new sl55 its on EBAY right now at MB sugarland in houston, it had a sticker 139K, they have it on EBAY for 122K i believe, they offered it to me 2 weeks ago for 115K and I passed bc I made a few calls and couldn't find a home for it

Anyway, this has been argued over and over again.... but just for the sake of information.

Even though the real auctions do have condition ratings and/or reports (grade or star 1-5) and I do believe in those ratings (I even think it's very conservative), the conditions (above, average or below) in MMR (Manheim Market Report) quoted above IMO do not reflect the true condition. To me they are meaningless.

Why?

No cars w/ ABOVE condition was sold lower than those w/ AVERAGE condition.
No cars w/ AVERAGE condition was sold lower than those w/ BELOW condition.

Too good to be true, eh? I don't think the market is like that. Depending on location, time and market condition, there should be a price overlap between ABOVE, AVERAGE and BELOW. In other words, there must be cars w/ ABOVE condition happened to be sold cheaper than AVERAGE and there must be cars w/ AVERAGE condition happened to be sold cheaper than BELOW.

Having said that, the condition in MMR only groups the price ranges into 3 mutually exclusive groups. That's why I said it was meaningless.

So amgplayer, now you know the answer

I could be wrong.... but I think it's the other way around.

Lemon cars are still covered under new car's warranty (if it has not expired) and the parts that caused the car to be lemon'd usually carry longer warranty.

Sort of. I learned there is big mark-up from auction to retail. I paid $118K Black, 10,500 CPO, pano, keyless, black nappa, TPMS, parktronic, and I think the deal was fair. The dealer is bumming: he has to replace the front rotors tomorrow ($1K each) and maybe the backs. I got $57K for the trade. I'm learning it's better to buy used at the trailing edge of the engine/body design cycle. I also learned that the 65 is a little more fun then the 55.

Zoink, what is that car?

..

First off i absolutely love the iphone it makes updating everybody on here so unbelievably easy, I highly recommend everyone gets one, its very very useful. Secondly in regards to the 600, I don't buy them anymore dealers dont like them bc the MB V12 albeit powerful and torquey is nowhere near as reliable as the V8 even the one in the 55. I know people are going to flame me here, but honest to god I bought an '02 late last yr w/30K miles for 27K at hobby auction and it had a leaky valve along with other problems that totaled up to an $8k repair bill, it took forever to sell and I bit the bullet on on half the repairs....earlier this yr I bought an '04 CL600 33K miles 4 of the cylinders were misfiring and it too had the leaky valve problem but this one was underwarranty. My dad, I found him an '05 CL600 1 month into ownership the check engine light came on and everytime the delaer would turn it off, it would come right back on 2 days later, never got it straight sold it within 3 months, bought an S500 and it dorve like a dream for the next 2 yrs. There was an article once in a businessweek about a rich man in europe and he had every MB you could think of and his favorite you guess? The S500 he said it drove better than the 600
