Thank you jeanmarc, this is a much better article and photo of the SLC than the one from AutoWeek.

Something must be off with the author's research or speculations. He claims that the engine will be initially be retuned to produce 700 hp and then twin turbo will be added. I highly doubt the 6.2L V8 is capable of 700 in its aspirated form. I think he may have gotten confused with the Hammer II, which is claimed to bring on 700 horses, but after TT-ing.

Is this the Gullwing project, which is supposed to replace the SLR? Now that is supposed to start with 700 and end with 1000 horses. Then, I may be inclined to believe that a n/a 700hp engine may crank out 1000 horses after being TTd. But it would have to have serious internals, not to mention, perhaps be a V12.

And only going to weigh 56 tons or so. Well, not maybe. I sure hope they put it on a diet so I will have reason to get one.

That's what they told me when I was 1st on the list for the SL55. If they only made 500 SL55s, they are all within 10 miles of Scottsdale!!

I am 1st again on the list for the gullwing...but I won't fall for the ltd production thing again.

I thought M-B and McLaren weren't going to work together on any more cars. In my opinion, if M-B wants to build the ultimate drivers car, its going to have to be mid-engined and relatively light. Those are hallmark qualities of the greats.

Even Ford knows how to do it. The FGT is a fantastic handling car. Had they let Gordon Murray design the SLR as a mid-engined exotic, I think they would've sold them out before they even hit the production cycle, and in the process built one of the greatest cars of the 21st century... not to say that the SLR as it is now is anything to sneeze at.

McLaren also in Mercedes supercar mix

While HWA in Germany readies its front-engined SLC, AutoWeek has learned that a second Mercedes supercar project is also on full boil—at McLaren in England. Shown in this illustration, the Mercedes-McLaren is a mid-engined, carbon-fiber-bodied car codenamed P11. Rumors suggest McLaren plans a range of cars based on the P11, which is due in 2010. McLaren has declined to comment on the project.

McLaren first began tinkering with the car, intended as a follow-up to the legendary F1 road car, in 2004, when F1 designer Gordon Murray developed a prototype called the P8 (“Let the Games Begin,” AW, Feb. 23, 2004).

Murray has since left McLaren Cars to form his own design firm (News, May 7), but the P8 project has continued, despite a series of fits and starts coinciding with the overhaul of Mercedes management in Germany. Rumors circulated that the project had been killed. But McLaren apparently has continued to invest in development of the car, reportedly with the support of some deep-pocketed investors, and now plans to bring the P11 to production at about the same time as the HWA SLC. Both cars likely will draw on the same Mercedes AMG engine supply

Well, it's cheaper considering the slow sale SLR. Looks better IMO

I recall Gordon Murray stating that the McLaren F1 car did not sell well and faced problems. MB made the SL55 and it sold like candy, and it wasn't really cheap but it sold well.

Biggest downfall to SLR sales i believe is the price. But i would be interested in seeing how many Mc F1 cars were sold and how many SLRs sold, just to compare

An other example is BMW with the Z8, if it was successful they would have made a new one by now. I believe the M5 & M3 far out sold them and hence, research and cost of development of a new one was not worth it.
This is just my opinion on things
