Tires for the 55

What is the best tire to run on the 55 for the rear?

What are you guys running and how do you like them?

My car is derestricted and the only tire that I found that was rated for the speed and the weight of these cars was Michelin PS2.

I also track my car on road courses and it has been a great tire.

Nitto NT555RII 285/40R18. Y speed rating. 1,609 lbs max load rating. R compound. Sticks great. Probably will have a short life, though. Limited number of sizes.

I just put a two Goodyear Eagle GS D3 F1s on the rear of mine and they're great. I've had them on my NSX for a quite awhile and they've been fantastic as far as durability and on the track. Check out tire rack. They have got some great reviews on their website and in Car and Driver's recent tire comparison. Just my $.02!!!

These are looking pretty good, what do you guys think of these?

Here's where I am at with the SL55.... I love this car it is everything I want in a vehicle, Convertible hardtop, Lots of horsepower, some what comfortable, a pleasure to drive, warranty work just about anywhere in the US. For anyone who has ever owned or driven a SL55 they know this car is hard to beat, maybe even impossible. But here is where I am at thought process wise. The new body style is coming out next year. The price of the current body style is going to plummet as it always does with MB cars when the new generation of car comes out. Look at the price of a 07 S class compared to an 06, crazy. I want a new SL63AMG when it comes out but I don't want to wait to trade in my current SL55 and take a huge unneeded bath on the 55. I have been looking at anything to trade the 55 in on to leave my money in another car until the new SL comes out. I have not found anything that I enjoy driving as much as I enjoy the 55. The M6 looks good but I really don't like the soft top look. The SC430 is not a bad car but the driving experience leaves me numb. I am starting to understand why some Benz owners keep their cars for years at a time. Currently the rear tires on my 55 are past the wear bars and spin with the smallest push of the accelerator. I don't want to wipe the car out in a rain storm or something. So the tires are really just for a short period of time until I trade the car in. I know I could just sell the car out right and wait for the new SL63 BUT here in NY there is a huge tax advantage in trading in your old car, on something like the 55 I would save ~10k in taxes by trading the 55 in. I have been thinking about what to do about this in my spare time for a few weeks now and can't come up with a good solution. What are your guys thoughts on this subject> I would love to hear any feedback you guys have or if you too have been thinking the same as I have.

That's true, but the facelift is scheduled for next year, and from the looks of the photos it leaves a lot to be desired... Not the next generation car which is supposedly set for 2011.

Anyway... Get the Potenza's on the rear, they are the cheapest... You're going do drive around on Bald tires on an $80,000 car, cause you're worried about spending $600?

Best,

RoydRage

I am more worried about wrecking the car and I haven't driven it because the tires are pretty much bald. I had the shop order the Pirelli rossos today at 272 each. I thought that was a pretty good deal. They should be here in a couple of days. I figured I would keep the set matched as the front look practically new and are the Pirellis.

Where are the photos of new face lift car coming next year?

I have the Michelin PS2 as well. The Perelli`s that came with the car
were way too hard. They felt funny at low speeds. I am getting good wear from the PS2`s as well. They have about 8K miles on them and look like I can get another 5-6 K more. I got to agree with Rage here. I mean what are you thinking ? Driving an SL55 with bald tires ?? Penny wise and pound foolish dont you think. If you eat a rim who`s fault is it going to be ?

The next Generation SL is still at least 2 years out. And from what I was told
at the AMG Challenge. They dont plan on making a SL63 at all ???

I fell in love with my toyo T1R's when I had them on my Porsche. Put them on my sl600 and could gas to the floor and would not even set off the esp. So just put them on my sl55. I drive a winding road that is just like a road coarse and the performance buries the stock pirellis. I have them on all 3 of my sl's and my porsche and will not go back.

my top speed 196mph in my sl600

I am running Conti Sport Contact both front and rear. Topspeed on German Autobahn, according to neddle, 355 Km/h.

No problems experienced, good traction, good all over performance.
