Command II
Does anyone know the timing for Command II for the SL55. I have a December build and will likely be stuck with the CD based navigation system unless someone knows different. Mercedes is being vague in answering this question. Also, are there any guesses at the cost to retrofit a Command II (if it is even possible)? THANKS

Fast_Bubba I also have a last week in Dec. build date for a SL55 . What is the difference in the two and what will I get . I am told I will get a car late January or first week in Feb.?

Just spoke with my dealer. Production has been moved up 1 month (12/02 to 1102).
I was informed that the car would arrive with Command II. The stone interior posted by Felix is reported as unavailable in the US secondary to safety (?? maybe they are concerned about shards in an accident). Thanks to all who replied.

What do you mean stone interior is not in production? I ordered an SL500 with stone interior, magma red..dealer didnt say anything about that? Let me know. Alson, I was told that all cars built from Nov. 02, and on will have Command II, DVD nav!!

I refer to the granite trim interior (in place of wood or aluminum) not the stone color choice which is assuredly available. On rechecking with the dealer, I was dismayed to learn that my 11/1/02 build SL55 will likely arrive with the CD-ROM based navigation instead of the DVD system contrary to my prior post.

I was told that the Command II could be swapped out for older version, but maybe that was salesman BS. Hopefully you will get the DVD system. I see that we are practically neighbors, Im on the MS gulf coast! Good luck..

I spoke to a factory rep. at the Orange County Auto Show last week and he said, "absolutely no SL55's would be diverted from Europe to help with the demand in the USA".

My take is that MB will only start shipping Command II "beginning 2003". Evidently it will not be possible to upgrade the present system to the new system without incurring "prohibitive costs from the MB parts and labor department".
Until then all SLs will be stuck with an obsolete CD-ROM-based system.
From experience, I will be pleasantly surprised if "beginning 2003" means anytime before end January next.
Does anyone have a reliable update? My expected build date is 15 November '02, and I'm not optimistic (about Command II, that is!). Anyway, I suppose that's the price one pays for modern technology - there's always something that's just become obsolete.
