Swap out Stereo/NAV unit: Is it on a fiber optic loop?
I have a 2004 SL55 and want to install another NAV unit with more features and Bluetooth.
Are the audio feeds to the BOSE system analog or fiber optic? This is my biggest concern. It should be pretty easy if they are analog. But if they are not..... I don't think it can be done without getting another amp.
Will there be any problems with interferance of other components if the MB head unit gets taken out?

last I looked, it was a Fiber Optic input to the amp, also the front speakers were a 1 ohm load, the sub was a 1/2ohm, center was 2, and the rear were mono 4 or 8 ohm

To clarify. I have an 04 SL55 with a CD based NAV. There are 10 or so CDs for the US.
Does that mean I can easily swap out the head unit for another doubble DIN unit without running into problems with the impedance of the speakers or a fiber optic amplifier connection?
Thanks.

no, pretty much everything needs replaced. today we have the technology of adding any source unit to the MOST system, like an Alpine Double Din, without replacing the rest of the components. the only down side is that the cluster won't display the info... so you will have to resort to being domesticated IE: GM, Buick...
and the steering wheel controls always seem to be up in the air

SL was one of those unfortunate lines that was affected when BOSCH wasn't able to deliver COMAND 2.0 on schedule. The 1st year W211 (2003) wound up not being able to offer NAV as even an option, only providing the pre-wiring for it. Some dealerships sold the car with the NAV option and promised to install it as soon as the 2.0 unit was made available.
