$ for 2005 SL55

I had an 03 SL55, and moved into an ML63. Well now I'm thinking of moving back but I'm curious on the pricing with the changes coming in '09.

I'm being shown a very clean 2005 SL 55 with 10,200 miles. Its white, most options (no disctronic, not sure if has cooling seats or not) - happens to have rims on it but comes with amg turbines as well.

forgetting the rims, what would be the right price to pay for this car? I'm hoping to get it lower since big depreciation is around the corner when the 09s roll out.

what do you all think on the pricing?

Are you buying it as an investment or to enljoy the car? What are they asking? You can go to auto trader, to a nationwide search for 2005 SL55's with around 10K miles and that will give you an idea what they are asking for them.

buying as an investment?
no I'm buying it to enjoy it, it will be my daily driver.

they are asking 80k -- i'm thinking it should be less, but I'm asking because I'm unsure of the value and perhaps someone here knows the market for these cars.

That sounds like retail to me.

The market is soft. Keep shopping. There are some motivated private parties
who are in distress. Mortgage and Real Estate types.

2005 Low Miles. Like $ 70K sounds right.

$80k is high for an '05. That is how much I paid for my '06 SL55 last year. However, mine had 24k miles. I have seen '05s going for high $60k to mid $70k. Check Ebay also.

As always with a high-end Mercedes don't forget to factor in the cost of getting an extended-warranty, preferably Starmark if you're buying from an MB dealer. An 05 may have an 04 in-service date which means you're looking at less than a year of warranty.

Although anecdotal, many would say that a garage queen driven less than 2,500 a year may end up with more problems than a daily driver with 25,000 a year and driving any unwarranteed SL is a proposition dressed in bad-idea jeans.

Based on asking prices for CPO'ed 2005's that are low mileage on autotrader, I would offer them $75K if they CPO it and then you want to extended the CPO to a full 3 years. Good luck.

E 63S Wagon Renntech, E55 Renntech, SL65, SL 55 030, ML, bunch of old ones--they come, they go...
$80k is close to 07 money, in this marketplace...

and remember that if you can find one, you can probably buy a leftover 07 SL550 for about20-22k behind list. I know it's not the same thing, but the 550 motor in the 230, with the late tranny, is really good. That 05 should be retail in the mid-high 60s. Current wholesale prices are high 40's for 03's, mid 50's for 04's, low mid 60's for 05's. Color and miles mean a lot, and the reason for the tumble in the 03/04 is because no one wants to own one of these out of warranty. Me included.

My recommendation is no matter what year and what price you get, Do not settle for less than the SL55!!!! The non AMG models are just about worthless on any resale. 1st my 2cents.

I have had much more success...

with SL500's in warranty, at the right price, than with any AMG car. From a reseller's point of view, it's just hard to buy an AMG car cheap enough. Your friends at MBUSA have cheapened the market by simply putting too many cars in it. Even the non AMG cars are way too commonplace. In any event, you can always feel better about owning a quality piece, even if you paid a bit too much for it. You just can't buy an average or less car (bad colors, no history/warranty/lousy condition) cheap enough. But I don't there's a lot of those guys on this forum.

Can anyone remember what other supercharged cars MBZ has produced in the past (besides the SL55 and an SLK)?

2006 SL55 with 030 Performance Package
The New SL63 hits in the spring /summer should cause the SL55 to drop if you can find a 06 07 08 SL55 with P030 performance pack that would be your best buy 07/08 with the 510HP even better some really good deals to be had on SL55s now

Good Luck

ITS NIGHT AND DAY.

If you want a first hand testimonial PM a friend of mine. SL-Chick.
She has a 2007 SL550 and has driven my SL55.
Guess which car she wished she had purchased in hindsight ?

I agree. Get the AMG model no matter what. Its worth the added expense !

But it's missing the big brakes, upgraded suspension and the amazing supercharged V8 exhaust note. Even the SL65 sounds like sewing machine compared to the SL55 note. Edit: Not bagging on the SL65 as it's an awesome machine that I have in a heartbeat, it just doesn't sound as nice.

Compare an SL AMG (55 or 65) to non-AMG model side by side lifts and start looking at the differences. The control arms on the AMG cars are enormous compared to non-AMG, etc, etc, etc. There is so much stuff beefed up on the AMG cars I think that long term they are going to hold up better but be slightly more expensive to repair in certain areas.

Supercharged MBZ Models Over the Years

Thanks .... I was thinking earlier, like over the last few decades about supercharged MBZ cars.

If indeed the SL55 and the E55 are the only examples of supercharged MBZ cars since the 50's, then I believe that "well preserved" examples of these supercharged cars will eventual become somewhat collectible over then next 5 to 20 years.

Just my opinion

What about the CLS55, S55, CL55??? All of these were supercharged at some point before the 63 engine started going them.

Good, good .... Add those to the list, too.

Any history buffs out there that know of other supercharged models from the 50's, 60's, 70's, 80's etc?

I guess it depends on what you are looking for??? I'm not into stop light racing or tracking my car. I don't like supercharged engines and the SL55 engine is the old style SOHC with 3 values which is not what I would want to pay the big $$$ for. If they used up-dated technology DOHC and all the other upgraded stuff they are doing with the SL63 engine then it might be worth the upgrade. Hell if you want to go really fast with low tech get a Zo6 Vette for less $$$ and you can blow the doors off the SL55. But as I said it is all about what you want and its your $$ so enjoy the car you own.

You need to look again, the SL600 has big 6 pot calipers & big amg rotors ... & easier to upgrade simple ecu/tcu 600+HP 900Torque! run straight pipes & sickness The guy added AMG quad tips + tail lights + 65 front bumperhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ApBD5YvaHNI

The 06 and older SL600 has basically the same front brakes as the SL55 except the caliper says MB not AMG. The rear brakes are similar to the SL55 but the rotor is not drilled like on the AMG car. I do not know if the sizing is the same in the rear but the front has the same rotor.

Only the 07 and on cars have the 6 pot brakes since the 8 pot was removed from the production sequence.
