Post March Edition of Automobile Mag says SL Black will have 670 HP SLR SOHC Engine

You guys need to check out the March edition of Automobile Magazine, they said that they found out that they upcoming SL Black Series will have a 670 HP version of the SLR's Supercharged V-8.

They also said it will weigh something like 575 pounds or so less than an SL 63.

I can't understand why they wouldn't use atleast the 65's engine, none the less a twin-turbo 32-Valve 6.2 liter V-8.

Anyone else heard any definitive info that goes against Automobile mag's info?

The V12 is heavy and not very thrilling. It is stupid quick but it lacks personality. The SLR motor is wicket, pulls hard, revs to 7k and gives a sporty feeling. A TT V12 would be nice, smooth, and fast but a black series is something with a hard edge. Something about a redline lower than 6k is not what you would find in a sports car.

I think if it is true the SLR motor is a solid fit for that car. 500 lbs less weight is crazy. That could be the ultimate car.

Maybe they have a bunch of 55K motors that they need to get rid of. I can't imagine using that engine when it suposedly violates the EU pedestrian safety regulations.

Not sure an old-tech, heavy motor like SLR's will be best match vs MCT box...

If Blk is <4000lbs, would think wt of motor over nose would be an impt consideration in driving dynamics.....and tq/traction balance is another consideration....

Am hoping there's a new-tech, lightweight, NA V12 motor (more similar to 599's motor; 63 already has superior tq curve vs 599 motor; would think any NA AMG V12 would have a more interesting ?550lb-ft)...

If one wants Luddite-tech cars w/elderly motors and gearboxes, can always go buy a new 997TT/GT2/3....

Its likely going to be a 6.2L motor of sorts. I doubt the old V12 idea and there is no new V12 coming so thats not going to happen.

I guess they could use a SLR motor if they had a taller hood than on the normal SL (space for pedestrians to be protected).

Time will tell. Regardless it sounds like a wonderful car.

Could this be the April issue, don't remember seeing this in the March issue?

The SLR engine is dry-sump, so it can be placed lower (no carter pan). But it would indeed need to conform to those pesky pedestrian rules.

Not entirely unlikely that SLR engine...

2023 Range rover 2022 RAM TRX (bad ass):) - 2023 911 Turbo 2019 Wrangler 2021 E63s Wagon
shows that the NA 63 engine will get a boost (or two) as NEEDED!
