Hi

I import a 05 SL55 into Canada last year.

You have to change the instrument cluster, which is a complete load of sh*t, because I have since found out that it can be reprogramed to KPH.

The rear bumpper had to be replaced

Two front bumper corners of the front bumpper. There like a pieces of styrofoam under the front bumpper cover.

And the best one, if you have keyless go, you have to replace the gear shift knob because it has start and stop on it instead of the international symbols. I figure if a person can't read english, he won't start the car and therefor won't need to worry about shutting it off.

And the car has to be reprogramed.

MB Canada charges 500.00 for a compliance letter. Work has to be done at a dealer and a MB Canada rep has to inspect the completed mods AS WELL AS VIEW THE OLD PARTS. Try getting the car and a 5 foot bumpper back to the dealer at the same time. The dealers authorization that the work was completed is not enough.

It cost me just under $6,000.00 and the worst of it was I imported the car in May and did not get the process through MB until October. I didn't care because I have a dealer plate and enjoyed the car all summer, if I did not have the plate I would have been pissed.

You'll save a lot of money, but MB Canada will not be very helpful in the process. My local dealer was great, however corporate was terrible.

Mercedes Benz Canada will provide you with a list of the required modific ations - after you provide them the VIN - you then HAVE TO HAVE the required modifications done by an authorized dealer IN CANADA. a Mercedes Rep will then inspect the car - and the parts that were removed - all for a fee of course - You then take the car to Canadian Tire to have it inspected again for the Feds - If they are happy you then can go and get your license plate. You should be able to insure the car once you have a bill of sale from the seller in the US. - Good luck -

Calgary is correct with the process, just watch out for the time it takes. You will not be able to license the car in Canada until the mods are done, however if there are tags on the car of some sort, you can insure and drive.

I wouldn't want to go through all this hassle myself, try getting a quote from a import company, for example: http://www.fournierleasing.ca/

Let us know how it goes and good luck!
