I have both in my garage right now (03 SL55 and 05 SL65). For me, the SL55 would be my choice. A 55 with the 030 performance package would be perfect. I find the 55 is more fun to drive (better response to driver input, sounds alot better, much better off the line). The SL65 really is something special and extremely fast once you get it moving but it's lacks the soul that the 55 has. I call the 65 the sewing machine b/c that's what I think it sounds like until the turbos kick in around 3K. Both seem very reliable but the V12 has to be more trouble and more expensive to fix.

Get the 65. Sheer power. Warranty and you're good to go.

Excuse my ignorance, what's "030 perfomance package"?

Haven't had the 65 long enough (10 days) to experience any problems yet, so I'm just going on info from 2 friends that have owned them longer. I don't own the 55 or the 65, they are dealership inventory (my demos).

It's the SL65 brakes, suspension, wheel style (not the same color center), and front bumper on an SL55 plus about 20hp more due to a difference in the tuning (513hp, I think). I think the option cost is about $14K. They are extremely rare and I should have picked up an 06 that a friend was selling 3 months ago but it was black and I don't want a black one.

Have driven a couple SL65`s over the years.
It is faster but does lack some of the exhaust note of the SL55.
It does have a turbo lag that takes getting used to.
V12`s are always more maintenence. More Cylinders.
If you want just raw HP. Go for the SL65.
Both have the 5 speed Trans.

My SL55 has the performance package and I have had it 2 years.
Its been flawless so far and even survived a rear end hit with minimal
damage.

Its a tough world when you have to decide between these 2 cars.

The implication in a number of posts over the years comparing the 600 (or 65) to the 55K is that the V12 is more likely to break down than the V8 and thus more likely to lead to an expensive repair bill. I have yet to see any evidence that this is true.

I agree with you though, both are great cars.

The bold part is incorrect, the PP does not have any increase in HP.

I had an 06 SL55 with Renntech pulley and ECU mod for about three months before trading it for an 06 Sl65 that is Renntech modded with ECU/TCU, and intercooler. Unbelievable world of difference in performance. SL55 more aggressive exhaust note and quicker engine response. SL65 has throw your head back raw power that doesn't give up; in spite of the mods I never experienced that type of power in the SL55. Both cars exhibit comparable handling when driven hard in the canyons and on high speed sweeping turns. Replace the front stock brakes on both and you're set to go.

Would I go back to the SL55? No way... I would miss the insane power, respectable performance and exclusivity of the 65.

If you spend a majority of your driving on the highway, I would go with the SL65. If the majority of your driving is on local roads or on windy back roads, go with the SL55. Comparing the motors, the M275 is a different league of power and tuning potential. Comparing exhaust notes, the SL55 is rivaled by few.

I find the stock 65 brakes more than enough

I believe that you also get an AMG limited slip differential as well with the 030 package and a raised speed limiter to 186 mph (300 kph)

I have an SL55 and have driven a number of 65s and for all the power of the 65, I still think I like the 55 better. It is a better all around package. Whereas
the 65 seems to be overwhelmed by the engine. But they are both great cars, and you will be happy with whichever you choose.
