Nav update disc?????

Instructions say NOT to put it in the dash slot. Put it in the rear unit. Does the SL have a dedicated rear unit for navigation?

Yes, the SL Nav unit is located behind the drivers side rear trunk panel. You'll see a small knob...turn it and pull...it will reveal the nav unit. Hit eject and insert the new disc and wait a few minutes and you'll be all set

The NAV has to be the worst feature about my SL.

When is Mercedes going to partner w/ someone like Garmin? They (along w/ Audi and BMW) are probably 10 years behind the Japanese automakers in this department, and truth be told... it's starting to play into my buying decisions.

PS: Yes, it's behind the seats!

Thanks, loaded it last night. I don't mind the nav in the SL, but I like the Porsche nav better. ML500 is usefull but I have not found a way to deactivate the damn thing once programmed. Only way to deactivate it is to stop the car and shut it off.

I bought mine at the dealership. I have an '05 as well so a word of warning is in order here. My nav DVD player in the trunk had to be replaced with a new one capable of playing the new disc. Fortunately, it was covered under the warranty. Sounds hard to believe, but it is true.

That is what I thought.

But if you are doubting my story, there is little I can do for you.

Funny thing about the MB Nav in my 05, it will find every fricking country club in the area but the other day I was in Bellevue and wanted to find the closest Starbucks. Nope, none listed but it did show me the way the the McDonalds accross the street from where I was parked.

I'm not doubting your story. I just think it was either explained to you wrong or it was an unnecessary replacement. The only problem I have seen was software and all you would need to do is put the previous years disk in and it would update the software incrementally or have a tech update it.

They tried updating the software only to find that they had to replace the unit. The car was in the shop for two days.

I do have one of the first '05s produced... maybe they changed the player sometime during the model year.
