I have an 03 SL55 AMG with 20,000 miles. Does anyone know anything about loosing performance after getting on the gas real hard - say doing a 0-60 run? I have noticed twice that the car seems as though it has lost the supercharger straight afterwards. If I pull over for a few seconds and then pull away again, it's fine.

Hi Dino,
Thanks for the reply. Any idea of the cost of this part and how difficult it is to change?

$200 or less depending on if you go with a new Mercedes (Bosch) pump or a Johnson pump (used by most especially if car is out of warranty). Nominal labor charge also as they are not hard to replace.

hey. i went through this exact same problem on my cls55 just a few weeks ago. i just got it replaced on Monday. the ic pump was the problem and I ordered a cm030 johnson pump as the replacement since I heard on this board that the original bosch pumps go bad easily. note that my cls has less than 20k miles on it whereas my sl55 has more than 50k on it with no problems. from what I know many of the pumps are bad from the factory but it's pure luck as to who got the good ones. anyways, you can read details of these pumps on the e55 forums and they also list several places you can buy them from.

The symptoms were the same, I had it on a Jag XJR.
As you know, can you then answer this, I bought some K&N filters for my SL55
but I was warned that the fine oil in the filters could mess up the air mass
meter.
Over to you.

My SL55 pump has been replaced once in 5 years. The second one is apparently from a good batch! ![Smilie](https://mbworld.org/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif)
If you choose to DIY, it is relatively easy. The pump is located in the front part of the passenger side wheel well.
We always recommend K&N filters with our tuning and have no problems with any of them. The secret is to not over oil them.

Happy to oblige. Most Mass Airflow Meters have wires/sensors which cross the air pathway. Think of a string through the middle of an airtube. The concern comes with the filter being oiled, and some of that oil dropping off the filter and making it onto these wires (the filter is always before the meter in the intake air path) - thereby damaging the meter by obstructing/destroying the wire/sensor. This is a possibility but I have personally never seen this, and the only times I've heard of it is when filters have been over-oiled by the owner, not by the manufacturer.
In the case of your fine stable of AMG cars - this is not a concern. None of the 55k or V12 biturbo cars use this type of air metering. They measure the density of air and are not subject to "risks" of an oiled filter, and the sensors are not located in the intake tract.
I hope this answers your question.
Regards,
Marcus
