I made the commitment and inked the deal on an 09 SL63 030 package. It should be at the dealer by Saturday! Its Paladium Silver with black leather. Trading in my E55. Debated this move for the last 2 months. Debating isn't really accurate more like obsessed. Drove everything from a DB9, 911TT, etc. Really wanted to move to another manufacturer since I already own an S550 and a ML350. But despite my desire to diversify I couldn't get the SL out of my head and I thought in the end that it had everything I wanted in the proper doses. The engine sound was nearly as perfect as the Aston and that Trans was better then anything else I had tested. It just seemed like the perfect daily driver.

I'll post some photos at the earliest moment. And will definitely report my experiences shortly.

Well I picked her up this morning! Played and set her up for myself all day. The car handles better than my E55 it seems. Despite being significantly heavier than the E55 it gives the feel of a much lighter car. I cannot imagine how to describe the engine sound. Every guy that hears it smiles and whoops even when he doesn't really want to seem so excited. It growls and grunts in a most awesome fashion.

It doesn't have the torque of my E55 but its not missing enough of that torque for me to miss it terribly. I'm not racing Porsche's or anything else for that matter. I want enough power to put a smile on my face and this does that in spades. Top down today in Philly (64F) with the airscarf was great.

The Palladium silver has so much depth. Its an intense color in my opinion. And having come from a black car, a nice change of pace that may actually appear clean for more than a few hours.

Oh, I tried the race start and it was cool but I think that I could do a better job on my own. I'll try it both ways after I put a few more miles on the motor. I know that the manual says not to beat it too much during the first 1000 miles but they were having an AMG day at my dealership and the AMG specialist from MBUSA said it would be OK to try the race start now. Thats all the encouragement I needed.

The transmission is the second best aspect of driving the car (just behind that sound!). Even when you're in S+ the trans downshifts with throttle blips so there is never engine lugging. Brake into a turn, accelerate at the apex and you sound and feel like a professional driver. You have almost as much control as you would with a clutch. Very well designed and executed. I drove the BMW M6 SMG and this trans makes that seem like dog poop.

Anyway more to come later and pics in tomorrow's daylight. Off to read my manuals.

I just posted my impressions of the car in another thread. This car is the ultimate driver, and the sound and tranny are incredible.

In addition, the car is refined in a way that no 55 has ever come close.

As I stated earlier, there is too much stamped plastic on the front facia. Other than that, the way this car blips thru the gears is amazing. I really understand why you thought about it for 2 months. Its really compelling.
