We've had several discussion threads that touched on the weight of various SL models so I decided to weigh my 2003 SL55.

Here's what the scale said and how it compares to other reported numbers for 2003 SL55s:
  • My car: 4,340 lbs (with 9 gallons of gas in the tank)
  • MBUSA: 4,235 lbs
  • Car and Driver: 4,411 lbs
  • Automobile Magazine: 4,311 lbs
With gasoline weighing approximately 6 lbs per gallon the weight of my car is within a gas tank of the magazine numbers. The much lower factory weight seems likely to be a dry weight, with no fluids in the car.

Anyone else care to take his or her SL over to a scale to get some numbers to compare?

My SL55 weighed 4420 with me in it and a 1/4 tank of gas on the scale at the dragstrip. My SL65 on the same scale with same fuel level weighed 4610 with me in it. I weigh 190 lbs.

The Washington State DMV lists the "taxable" weight at 3995. Good thing since the fee schedule increases substantially at 4000 lb.

If you have a Pano Roof it will add over 100lbs to the car.

Base SL500's weigh considerably less than 55/600/65 models...upgraded bigger brakes/larger engines w/SC'er or Turbo's/cooling etc...

THE PANO ROOF ONLY ADDS 10-12 LBS (THE GLASS) VERIFIED
This has been discussed before and the only difference in the Pano roof vs the stock aluminum roof is the 1/8 inch glass panel, which is 26 inches x 42 inches. and weighs around 8-10 lbs. Adding the weight of the closing sunvisor is around 2-4 lbs. Do not forget that the aluminum panel and headliner replaced by the Pano roof has weight maybe 2-4 lbs..

1) thing I've found out thru model line-up SL55- SL600, the SL600 Biturbo V12's weigh in @ fact claims of 4429-4490 I can't count the amount of uniformed blowhards who've noted the extra weight being ALL in the nose of Biturbos heavy V12 & how they could actually feel the difference (No NOT you jmf003)

Reality, SL600- come w/Spare whl-tire, roadside kit-tire inflator machine where the SL55 DOESN'T (those items weighed on scale = nearly 100 lbs) added weight in the REAR, furthermore the 600 has a true 5.5 liter V12 TT w/extra intercooling, where the SL55 has a true 5.4 liter V8 w/50+ lb Kompressor... Point being the engines weigh nearly same on 600 vs 55 models, remove spare tire/whl roadside kit etc from SL600 & they're nearly equal in weight to SL55

I'm thinking of installing some helium balloons in my car to further lighten it.
