Mercedes-Benz SL 55 AMG (R 230) and CLK 55 (W 209)
The AMG Special SL (successor of the SL 73) has not been officially introduced. I don't think there are any photos out there yet (official or unofficial).
So far, AMG itself hasn't even stated if it is going to be an improved V8 Kompressor or based on the new V12 engines. Everything you read about it, is pure speculation or intended misinformation.
Best regards,
Ronald

A year ago, someone told me about the CL 55 Convertible for example, which was canned later. Then there was the 'A21 AMG' which changed to 'A 210' just weeks before delivery. 5 Months ago, AMG said, that the new E 55 Estate would only have 2 exhaust pipes, but in the mean time AMG changed their mind and went back to 4 pipes (already seen it on the Autobahn). Same thing with the CLK 55 Kompressor or the new E 55 having 500 PS like the SL 55, etc., etc.
I don't participate in rumours and wait until the product decisions are FINAL.
But, hey - Don't get me wrong: You could be right, of course!
Best Regards,
Ronald

2003 S500 4-matic, 2003 SL55
So what do we know officially? There is a SL600 due out soon. It has a 12 cylinder bi-turbo engine that seems to propel it no faster than the current SL55. Is there going to be a AMG version. Is there some kind of special car that we can order for the US and not just for Europe?

Unfortunately, on future cars they are usually either behind or print stuff they found on the web...

SL55
Hi all,
This is a re-post of the infomation thhat I was given when I visited AMG last week.
At the Geneva motor show in March AMG will announce a SL65.
It won't be a listed Mercedes car but an AMG special like the SL73 (R129) was.
You will have to order a stock SL600 and then take it to AMG for modification.
The V12 twin turbo will be bored out to 6500cc and tuned to give 620+ BHP.
Cost approximately E 40,000 on top of base SL600.
However as the base SL600 is not an AMG vehicle in the first place it is not clear if the 65 will have all the other AMG parts such as brakes, gearbox, suspension etc etc.
The SL73 had the body kit but not much else and was not an AMG 'sports' version like the old SL60 or the SL55. In fact I'm told the SL73 was a bit of a pig.
Graham.

I believe LondonLad is on the right track, but am sure that all the specs. including the actual model designation may still change slightly.
All hp numbers from AMG have been conservative and I would be surprised if a 600hp engine wouldn't actually do 620hp.
The question here is was Mercedes believes is politically correct and works for marketing purposes.
Either way, don't expect the cars to be offered in the US. It's highly unlikely...
