SL55 Wheel offset - Help

Someone local is selling their wheels, which were on a 2003 SL500. he tried convincing me that the same wheels will fit my SL55 since his current set of wheels came from a SL55 AMG.

I'm concerned if it will fit the SL55 because of its big brake kit (stock)

they're iforged essens, special ordered for a SL500. anyone know if they will fit my SL55?

TIA

Unfortunately there is more than just the offset to worry about. The barrel diameter and the spoke position can also get in the way.

If you're looking for advice, I'd suggest doing a trial mount before buying the wheels. If they don't fit, it will be pretty obvious.

But to answer your question, OEM offsets for an 18" SL55 wheel are in the low 30s.

Good luck!

20" barrel should be more than enough to clear the AMG brake calipers.

ET22 might work. You are only losing 8mm which is about 1/3 of an inch. If it doesn't work you can roll the fenders to pick up some additional clearance.

ET50 would definitely rub on the inside of the wheel well, but it would also rub on an SL500. Maybe he's using a spacer to reduce the effective offset? A 15mm spacer on an ET50 offset would effectively become an ET35 offset.

Spokes are still the unknown variable.

the guy brought the wheels that were built for his SL500.. but never mounted them because he got something else

that's odd, even if the brake kit comes in the way is there anyway I can get around it?

what's really confusing me is that he got the wheels custom made for his SL500 directly from iforged

50mm offset is about what an S or CL class offset is. I would be concerned that changing the front and rear offset of the wheels would change the way the car tracks. Also 20" wheels are really easy to damage.

18 inch AMG SL spec wheels are all ET 31 front and 33 rear.

The 19 inch AMG SL wheel (CLS as well) is an ET 25 and 28.

Hope that helps.

So yes the AMG wheels from the SL500 are the same as the wheels for the SL55. They did have a different paint color however. The AMG car had a satin finish as they called it which is more shinny while the SL500 sport had a more standard mercedes Silver finish. The Early SL500 sport cars had a polished lip as well.

thanks

the offsets were wrong as he got them from discount tire who I believe just guessed on the number

we test out the wheels today, there was barely any space between the rear brake caliper and the rim, about 1-2mm ! but luckily it still fits.. I was worried that the front calipers were going to be a problem since the brakes were bigger, but it fit perfect! and there was more room between the rim/brakes than the rear

Hopefully the rear one doesn't become a problem, its so close to the rim

Glad to hear it worked out!

The wheels shouldn't flex enough under normal use to make the narrow caliper clearance a problem but if it was me, I'd probably check every now and then just to make sure everything stayed where it was supposed to.
