My shop installed a few 45 degree elbows with the straight pipes .They followed the original contour of the stock exhaust and installed hangers where needed.Go to a hot rod car meet one night and ask who in the area does custom exhaust! Its so easy.

I'm going to have the resonators removed from my SL55 sometime in the next couple weeks...as soon as I can find a reputable muffler place in the area to do the job. My question is this: is there a difference between installing an X-pipe or a straight pipe? Also, will they have the proper materials on hand or do I need to order the correct pipe online ahead of time? Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!!

X or H pipe

I had the muffler shop make it right there. It was an H pipe that they made. They drilled 2 holes on each straight pipe and welded a piece in between them(cross over closest to the front)Im not too sure if it makes positive gains but i installed it as many have mentioned .

On SL55 (unlike E55) the resonators cannot be X or H piped. The resonators (meaning the first pair of mufflers froward of the rear mufflers and aft of the secondary cats, not the actual primary or secondary cat pairs themselves) can only be removed and replaced with a straight section of pipe due to exhasut configuration under the sl55 car. The secondary cat can, however, be removed in place od a cross-over type sectioned replacement. Tuning may have to encorporate a way to remove any CEL associated with this modification.

Thanks for the responses, guys. I'm assuming any capable muffler shop should have a straight pipe on hand so it sounds like that shouldn't be too much trouble.

A couple of other quick questions to those who have done this to their SL55. Is there any drone in the cabin and if so, is it at high or low speeds(or both)? Also, I've read conflicting opinions that removing the resonators will result in a slight loss of low end torque. Is this true and if so, is it enough to even be noticeable? I can't imagine removing the resonators would have that much impact on torque, but I'd definitely like to hear opinions from those who have done it. Thanks again!!!

I had mine done about one month ago and love the sound.
If someone would like to hear them live, let me know.
I am in the Chicago area and drive the highways late night...

ANY decent muffler/exhaust shop should be able to do the work flawlessly.

I haven't deleted my resonator yet, but will be shortly, so I can't comment on the drone.

Anytime you open up the exhaust, you will lose back-pressure. This will normally result in a slight loss of low end torque, but should also give you a few extra HP high up in the RPM range. Honestly, you probably won't notice the lost torque or gained HP.

I'm in IL. as well, but unfortunately I'm in the southernmost part of the state so I'm about 300 miles from you. Not too convenient as far as trying to hear yout car live.

Have you experienced any drone or does it sound good in the cabin at both high and low speeds?

Well, I finally got around to having the resonators removed from my SL55 today and all I can say is WOW! It sounds like an aftermarket exhaust was put on the car and the best thing about it is there's no drone in the cabin. As other have said, this is the way the car should have sounded stock....low and mean. I absolutely love it!!!

What are the disadvantages of removing these resonators?

How much of skill would it be someone whos never done such a job, maybe a few, and especially on no AMG?

To my knowledge, there really are no disadvantages as all you're doing is improving the sound of the exhaust to a deeper, throatier tone.

As for the skill required to do this job, any capable muffler shop should be able to do it, but I had a trusted mechanic that works on all my cars do it for me. The total job took right around an hour and was probably the simplest task that could ever be done on an AMG.

on some cars, freeing up the exhaust causes an increase in gas mileage (i know sounds crazy, right?). you'd think it's the opposite, since many aftermarket exhaust companies advertise increased HP and MPG with their exhaust systems.

anyways, a good way to test this would be for Brent72 to reset his MPG indicator, and report back after a few days/weeks/months/etc.

that'll give everyone a good before and after reading

I'm afraid I can't confirm any increase in MPG because I've had my foot in it a little too much listening to the deep, throaty sound of the exhaust.

When I start driving a little more civilized I'll reset the fuel indicator and see what kind of mileage I'm getting.

Gives it a more deeper growl - about 30-40% louder. Makes me wonder why didn't it sound like that stock!

Heres a sample vid of it

That's nearly as good as a SL63, not as tuneful though, still an improvement
I guess.

Not that I promised anything, but here are a couple of links showing the result of exhaust mods on my 55.

I love the whine from the SC. Did you do something to make it more pronounced? I can barely hear it on my car.

Yeah, the SC really screams in the vid. I’m running Renntech’s Package Plus which includes an extra large SC counter pulley for added boost. I don’t notice it in the cabin though and was surprised at how loud it was when I first listened to the video.

I did once have a guy comment about the screaming SC. He was driving an earlier 2000 and something Corvette ZO6 and we had a little run at a light. I ate him up. He tried again while rolling at about 30 which I presumed was a sweet spot for him because he picked it. The results were the same. He then pulled up next to me and asked me if I had a blower.

Any update on the drone? I know Charles re installed his resonators because of a popping noise at highway speeds coming from the exhaust.

Also, how can they weld the top of the slip on pipes if the exhaust is still installed on the car? There would be leaks....

Resonator delete on 2004 SL55

Can someone who had the job done please comment on the following questions:

Are the rears considered resonators or also the center ones?
Which ones are removed when talking about "deleting resonators"?
Does the exhaust system have to be dropped to weld in the straight pipe or is there enough room on top to insure a perfectly closed weld all around?
Is there a preferred kind of pipe to be used for this job?

My car has a Stage 6 RennTeck package which includes the RennTech headers.

Thanks
