Test drove the sl63 amg this morning
This morning I test drove the sl63 amg. Over the 45 minutes of city and highway driving I can see why so many people love their sl63's. I have to say that exhaust is alot more beastly than my sl55. I would say alot has been improved over the sl55, I do miss the engine in the sl55. Overall though, I still do prefer my sl55. I just like the way it delivers the power.
I also test drove a mb certified 2006 sl600 for about 20 minutes. I love the 12 under the hood. Such a step up from the brutal v8 in the sl55. The sl55 does sound alot better though, plus there is no lag in the 55.
At this point in time I'm debating whether to (1) keep my sl 55amg (2) buy a used sl600 and do the ecu tune (3) buy a used sl 65amg
I really am not sure at the moment... Any insight would be wonderful since summer is almost here and I want to get it worked out by then.
Enjoy the nice weather!!!

04 SL55 (sold),05 SL55, 09 SL63, 07 C2S cab Porsche,
Make certain there is no noise in the floorboard. I have a rattle they say is "normal" that is driving me crazy. Wish I never traded in my 55.

Any AMG with a MCT is a winner. Wished it was available in the 65s.
It hard for me to understand that you rather would keep the SL 55 instead of getting an SL 63. The MCT makes it far more responsive and a better road course car.

I went from a Rennteched SL55 to a Rennteched SL65 and have never looked back. The power of the V12TT is addictive, you want to use it more and more.

i disagree with youze!
i just replaced my sl55 with an sl63. i cannot understand why anyone could prefer the sl55. the sl63 is better in every way with only a single exception. lo speed torque is not as good on the sl63. but when the rpm goes up to 4000, watch out! the sound note is glorious and the acceleration incredible! i would never go back to the sl55!

It all depends on your driving needs. When your SL is a daily driver and you live in the city or suburbs, you have to live with slower and stop-go traffic.
A super or turbo charged V8/V12 is simply more fun to drive in that situation. That torque simply puts a smile on your face and makes traffic bearable
You have to do a whole lot more to squeeze that fun factor out of MCT or improved suspension.

You cannot judge a 63 by a short test drive. To understand it you have to live with it then everything falls into place. I now finding myself cornering
faster, braking later it feels far more like a sports car. That's why they chose
it as the F1 Pace car. The Pace car uses harder pads for track use, a beefed
up oil cooler with a re-enforced front apron, this is why they do not use the
SL65 that has too much torque and a softer ride.
The 63 just keeps getting better and better!

It says quite plainly that they are using the SL63 as pace car because
out of the Mercedes range it's the most suitable.
If the reason was that MB has the contarct why don't they have an ML as pace car!!!

MB has had the Formula 1 safety car relationship since 1996. The decision for the selection is not based on how well the car will perform its duties at the track. Last year the car was the CLK63 Coupe (non-Black Series). The CLK 63 actually had to be "upgraded" for track duty (modified engine and weight reduction). I can assure you that it was as much marketing as anything else that came into the selection of the CLK 63 ... as well as you pedestaled SL63. Who knew that the MB F1 marketing ploy actually worked on consumers...

Tom is spot on, it's almost entirely based on marketing; MB is pushing a new car style; the sl is a flagship to the marque and it fits the brand image tied into racing that mb wants to expose...Louis Hamilton drives an SL63 AMG in his hometown in Switzerland, hmmm maybe it's becasue it's the best car ever!! Or maybe, just maybe mb might want their hot shoe to be tied in closely to their brand marketing campaign on AND off the track.
simple example:
Enter stage; act 1 scene 1 your friendly MB dealership:
consumer: " Wow that Himilton sure is fast!"
friend: " yeah but he drives a funny looking car whizzin around the same darn pattern each time"
consumer: "yeah but hey I heard he's got an sl63 amg, wow since he can have any car he wants and chooses the sl63...it must be the best car ever!!"
friend: "wow really, that makes perfect sense"
kind mb salesman: "that's right and you can have the exact same one, please step here into my office...YOU TOO can be fast!!"
finace mgr "that'll be $140K please"
consumer: "ok great, can't wait to take this to a driving school or screw it maybe I'll speed past a few lawyers or doctors or better yet their patients driving home from the country club in their porsches...then I can talk about my kills on faster cars
Scen end; exit stage right!

All you need to do is change it from $140K to £100K and you captured Sound8's dealership experience...

Are you sarcastic and trying just to pull everybody's chain here?
I truly do not believe there are people out there thinking like you (if you are for real) and able to plunk $140k for a car at the same time.

Tom, I am sorry I made a fool of you. :
I use to admire the way you responded and answered threads.
But now you are reverting to insults AGAIN
I have done a great job promoting the SL63 I think it's a fantastic sports car ( my words not yours)
and I am sure Mercedes appreciate it.
You however have been knocking probably the best SL that MB have ever
made. It says by your name MB World Fanatic, your not a fanatic ( your
words not mine) and you wouldn't get a job as a PR man working for MB.
Please try and answer without throwing your toys out of the pram!
As you can see that my posts use insults very sparingly, when you respond
to a thread I don't see what it has to do with the member.
I am away now for a couple of weeks, so when you wake please contain
your venom, and inject it in a couple of weeks.
