Why on earth would you get a panoramic roof on a car that has a whole top that comes down with a click of a button?...I mean if you don't want the sun/wind/cold etc., you would have the roof up. If you do, then you simply put it down. I cannot follow the logic or reasoning behind getting that as an option...

It's not always warm enough for the top, but the added sunlight is always a nice feature. I *always* drive with the shade part open on all of my moon-roof equipped crs.

I agree and cancelled it as an option - expensive & superfluous, but I had to talk myself out of it!

It also seems to detract from the car aesthetically.

Seemed like a good idea to begin with, as did the ventilated seats until I realised leather conditioning cream, crumbs and probably perspiration would fill in the holes nicely....

Agree too and ignored the option for the same reasons. If you go for a light colour interior like alpaca grey/ash with grey roof lining the interior is very light. No need for pano roof.

But with graphite leather and black alcantara roof I think pano roof makes more sense.

Had it been a low cost or no cost option I may have gone for it, otherwise agree with the above.

Coem to think of it when when I specified mine it was not an option for UK cars! No decision to make.

Interesting replies... Must be that grey sky that nobody in the UK wants to see

It's amazing that the panorama roof is such a debated option. Does anyone have a sedan/SUV or coupe with a sunroof/moonroof? Did anyone agonize about that purchase?

I wouldn't have bought a Mercedes CL without a moonroof and the SL with the top up is nothing else than a smaller version of that...

But seriously, I would ask anyone to hold their judgements on the pano roof until taking a test drive with one. Lots of light and extra headroom (I am 6'2" and its helpful). One of the most valuable options and in my opinion a bargain compared to the old pano roof (129 body) with less than half the cost and less of a rip-off than the $2000 Motorala cell phone.

As I mentioned before - both on a BMW M5 and a Lexus LX470, these are nice features to have. Just because it's a day doesn't mean you want the top down, so the pano-roof is a nice compromise. And it's a relatively cheap thing to add...

Does the addition of the panoramic roof affect the interior noise level? Does anyone have picture of the panoramic roof with and without the shade deployed?

Resale desirability

Will you get an additional two thousand on resale if your SL is equipped with the panoramic roof? My guess is yes as people who are buying top end cars want all the bells and whistles. It may more importantly be the key to a quick sale since a potential buyer may be looking for an SL with the panoramic roof and pass on those without it while a buyer who doesn't care will still buy your SL either way.

As to the question regarding interior noise, the SL500 I drove on the autobahn last summer with the panoramic roof was perfectly quiet and I did not detect any sound intrusion even when going at speeds over 100 mph.

have silver/charcoal to be built March 10, pined over whether to get panorama roof. Decided to get it for the same reasons I like sunroofs and when the top is not down. Not 100 hundred percent sold on "tyarga" look but at least it will different than all the other silver SL500s with AMG package.

The real question is what do you do with your other cars that have a sliding glass roof? I have an S600 with such a roof, and I find that I always have the sliding opaque panel pushed back out of the way so that I get more light in the car when the glass roof isn't open. Indeed, I can't remember when I last closed the thing. And of course there is absolutely no more noise than in an all steel roof car.

If you think about your behavior with a glass roof in a sedan, you will probably come out like I did, and get the Pano roof.

Panoroof

I couldn't imagine why you wouldn't have the Panoroof. The sunshade is much nicer than the solid sliders that most moonroofs have. I think a moonroof is a useless thing in any car because who drives around with the roof open? The SL Panoroof stays shut and adds immeasurably both to the inside environment and to the outside look.

By the way, the Targa look does make the car look sportier and is more in keeping with the performance theme of the SL55. It definitely differentiates it from those Little Old Lady SL500s.

And it looks best in a non-black car where you can't really see the contrast with the body color.

IMHO
