Keyless Go...

Has anyone firmly confirmed whether the latest production has the seperate card or if the "chip" is in the key itself for the keyless go????

My car was delivered 14 days ago and had the card for the keyless go.

My friends car arrived last weekend (German) and had the chip in the key. I was also able to order a key with the keyless chip in last Wednesday in the UK

The card has a useful function which tells you whether or not the car was locked when you walked away (Did I lock the car? worries in the middle of a concert, for example). Does the key provide the same function?

Blue,

I don't know!!

I haven't had a chace to read my friends book yet, it covers keyless go in the key.

You can program the key to unlock just the drivers door in the same way as you can the card.

I am picking up my key today so I'll let you know.

With my recent electrical problems I now always carry the key so a combined key/card would work for me.

Did they sort out your electrical gremlins - was it really the TPM control unit?

No, the key version does not have this functionality.

Gremlins,

The TPM has been disabled since last Wednesday and no further faults have been displayed as yet. It has managed a week with no warnings before but it was very rare so I am optimistic.

The car goes to the dealer next Monday for the new TPM unit to be fitted.

I picked up the new key today but it had no keyless go in it! Despite explaining to the dealer in great detail what I wanted he ordered the wrong thing.

I now have 4 friends with SL55s! One in France and 3 in the UK. 2 of the UK cars are German spec. So now my experience base is growing!

My friend in France rang me today; he had started his car in his garage with keyless go. When he went to put it in drive he could not get it out of park. (foot on brake)

So then he tried to turn the engine off but the display said 'select park' so now he is stuck, can’t drive off and can’t stop the engine!!

The French dealer told him to disconnect both batteries!!!!! (with the engine running, a bad move on any car)

He followed the dealers’ instructions and the car kept running.

Called the dealer back and they said they would send a tec TOMMORROW!

I suggested he reconnected the batteries and then pulled the ignition fuse, put the fuse back, disconnected the batteries, had a cup of tea, reconnected the batteries and tried again.

Guess what, its all back to normal, but for how long?

Graham.

I can see I need to improve my social circle. Most of my friends think I am barmy spending "so much" on cars and choose to spend their money on other things.

You can stop the engine by pulling out two fuses from one of the fuse boxes. It's madness to disconnect the batteries. First, the alternator will continue generating enough power to run the car, second the battery acts as a voltage regulator to prevent the alternator voltage increasing above safe limits and third, he risks cooking all the car's electronics. The French dealer must be mad, completely certifiable.

As an altermative, he could have tried syphoning fuel out of the tank...

My educated bet would be the card and the regular key.

But I think cars produced as 04s in July could very well get the key of the New E class and do away with the card.

I had the card on my 2003 SL500 Sport Il ike it because it fits into my wallet and the key does not. I would rather have the card!

Best is to have BOTH card and key, BUT with the key having the (chip from the) card embedded into it. I do not understand why M-B hasn't thought about it!

What a charade for your French friend, Graham! How on earth did that happen? Keep us informed...

Now I can't see the point of keyless go if its a key. What advantage over pressing a key button in range to open the car, inserting a key and turning the damn thing, as I do now, compared to pressing a door button then another button!
I mean, what am I paying so much money for? A key is hard to pocket, hard to remember, hard to trouser. A card is easier and in a wallet, permanent. And if you have to have both key and card personed, what price Keyless Go?

Hardly a major advance IMHO....

Mustard:
Here's the point for the keyless-go WITH the key: only the key would allow you to remotedly pull the top down and up from outside. Therefore, sometime one might want to carry the key to be able to have top down before getting inside the car, then crank up the engine WITHOUT having to use the key ... Otherwise, you're right, the card is good enough!

I loved the keyless go with card and would not order a car without again. It is one of the new features that is a help.

For example approching the truck with hands full you do not have to fumble around for keys just open the trunk!

I have a 2003 S class with keylessgo card, I have ordered a SL 350 with keyless key, my question is, May I order a keylessgo key for my S class? If yes, anyone knows which part number must I order?

I also agree with you, "if you carry keyless card, carry your key too" I could tell you my experiences...I think that is the reason of the keylessgo key. Would be a good idea for keyless card owners to have possibility to order a keylessgo key.
