Miles put on while in for service

I took my SL55 in for an annoying squeek in the rear. I was sure they would have to drive it several times to know if they got it fixed but when I picked up my car 1 week later it had an additional 162 miles on it. I was not very happy.
A good friend of mine took his car in to the same dealer for a broken trunk closer and when he picked it up there was an additional 600 miles a week later.
Has anyone else had this issue?

Yes, My car was in the shop for three days waiting for work to be done. After nothing had been done I picked it up for the weekend and found it had been driven about 40mi just sitting in the lot. Did not take it back to have the work done (oil change).

I asked what was going on and he said "the mechanic took it for a ride to see how it went". I didn't check to see how much rubber was missing but when I started it, got a good puff of smoke out of the pipes. Never did it before and has not done it since.

Now it "while you wait" service for me.

You are not alone! I took my SL55 to the dealership last year for an oil leak. They kept the car for a week and was told the MB wanted them to drive it around to make sure that the oil leak was fixed. The dealership told me they were only going to drive it around residential areas. They put 140 miles on my car and used up all of the gas! I was one tick away from empty. For them to burn up almost 20 gallons of gas and only put 140 miles meant they were getting 7mpg so to me, that implied they were hot-rodding around town in it. I immediately complained to the service manager and the only thing they did was apologize and filled up my gas tank.

anytime I'd take a car to a dealer (not my first choice)...I always mark the mileage, ussually by making an entry in my records folder...then I go to my service advisor with that and let him know that I know what it is and we discuss what we can expect at pick up. I guess I could get him to initial by the entry in my records folder. Service advisor can keep the unruly techs in line...ussually

That really sucks. Happened to me once, I always wait for the cars to get done when possible.

My dad's GT Mustang got a 400 mile boost when he had it in for service. I imagine they zoomed down to Florida or Savannah.

Heh, you ever tried to show an intermittent fault to a dealer, never happens
does it. It probably took 160 miles to find out what was causing it.
I hate noises, they could have mine for 1000 miles if it cured the problem.

I had mt chevelle on consignment at a highend/muscle car indoor dealership one time in ct. the dealer wanted me to put a full exhaust on the car, it dumped after the mufflers, right near the axel, I told him fine, but it would come out of the profit of his end, and he agreed.

2 days later i am sitting at work and i see mt chevell go by my window of my store sideways with smoke billowing off of the rear tires! i call the dealership in a rage like you can imagine, and he tells me " we dropped it off at meineke down the street for them to fox the exhaust this morning! its not even here"

the meinake was about 100 yards up the street from me and on the other side of the road, i walked in there and had a "meeting" with the manager. lets just say the emplyee who was driving the car bolted out the back of the shop and never returned and the manager quickly becam quite cooperative.

but lesson learned, i know where my cars are at all times, thats for sure

A fried of mine works for Audi and they do the same thing. The dealers allow the techs to take them home, etc to supposedly immitate real world driving. I think it is crap because many people abuse of that and drive them like they are their owns vehicles. I have taken my sl55 twice to the dealer but have never had this issue. I would raise hell if this ever happened to matter no matter what they said about trying to make sure everything is ok. Just my 2 cents.

usually cars are only allowed to be taken home by shop foremans or group leaders with permission of shop foremans/service managers. If you are bringing it in for clicking noises or intermittent problems there is really no choice and some of them live far from the dealer. I remember I had to drive a customers car to try and trigger the TPS system it just happend to be a prowler and the customers friend saw me driving it. I was about 18 at the time needless to say the customer was pissed! He thought I was joy riding in his car, but I wasn''t (well sort of) the service manager was too big to fit in the car though so he told me to go and do it.

I took mine in for an oil change to a dealer that I thought was reputable. It had an extra 3 miles on it when I picked it up. Whether it is 3 or 200 miles, it is not right for a dealer to use another person's car for their own personal transportation.

I put in my car for service in late October due to a heated seat issue, The car stayed for about 2 weeks before I got it back, while it was gone I got a strange call from my friend that owns a store about 10 miles away or so from the dealer. My friend asked me why I didn't stop in to say hi, I told him my car was in service, and he told me I was lying because he just saw me 5 minutes ago passing his store (actually he said flying past my store). I asked him if he was sure it was my car, he told me that he was 200% sure it was mine or a replica of my car. My car is lowered with SL65 wheels and carbon lip and spoiler, so it might of been the dealer flying around town, I never wrote down the milage however my tank was empty also when I got there with it almost half way up, for a simple seat issue.

I'm marking my miles as well.

I took in my 03 cobra to the dealer one time and it had almost 30 'extra' miles on it. I wonder what happened there I was furious. There is absolutly no reason whatsoever they needed to test drive my car. Especially without my permission. I can only imagine what the ******* driving it did. Sucks people are so sketchy even at dealerships. This is why we cant have nice things!

Actually you would be surprised how many miles you can drive trying to find a squeak.
