03 SL55 no dyno mode DIY

Renntech was not able to put my car in Dyno mode they other day.

I asked a MB tech today why and he said some 03's were only able to be put in dyno mode with the STAR.

Sucks but I was going to leave this thing stock anyway. I wonder if a software update would help...

I'm interested in this also...I just posted on another thread but this one seems more appropriate...

What I want to know is:

(1) Do I have Dyno mode on my '03 SL55 and how would I find out?
(2) If yes, then how do I get the car into and out of this mode, once again for an '03 SL55 OR if no, what can I do for this?
(3) What is the advantage of dyno mode (from what i understand you don't want to drive with it; so then the only place you'd use it is when you have the car on a dyno, and that's it...correct?)

To put my 2003 into dyno mode I have to press and hold the trip odometer button. On later models you tap the button three times instead of holding it.

I don't recall the exact steps. The following list is pretty close or possibly even dead-on:
1. To start, the key must be removed from the ignition.

2. Insert the key and turn to position 1.

3. Immediately press and hold the trip odometer reset button until the instrument cluster beeps. There is no visual message, only an audio beep. Be patient, this takes around 40 seconds.

4. Press the lower menu button (it looks like two sheets of paper, the one with the writing in the background behind the blank one)

5. Press the up arrow button.

6. Press the "+" sign to disable the Traction System (turn "ON" test mode)

7. Start the engine, the traction system is now disabled.
To return to normal, remove the key and restart the engine. The traction control warning should no longer be in the cluster. If it is, shut the engine off and remove the key again. Then insert the key and turn to position 1. Note that the DYNO test screen is displayed immediately. Push the "-" button to enable the traction system (turn "OFF" test mode)
NOTE: When you first turn the key to position 1, ESP DYNO Test screen pops up, then after 1-2 seconds it may disappear while faults are displayed. If you weren't fast enough in pressing the "-" button before codes were displayed, just wait until all codes cycle by, then the ESP DYNO Test screen will reappear.

Putting the car into dyno mode completely disables ESP and other electronic controls. It's most useful when running dyno tests but some folks use it for dragstrip launches.

Isn't the ESP different on the 2003 SL55's too? I hear that it will allow burn outs with ESP off where as the 2004 and up SL55's still allows the ESP to work to a degree. I don't know this to be fact, only hearsay. A good clear up on this would be good to know.

Can you get into the diag menu? Most cars from this generation, if you have the key in postition "1", accy, not fully on, and the screen showing the basic mileage/trip display, if you press the reset "R" button three times quickly you should hear a beep and be in the diagnostic menu. From there you can scroll to an option for dyno mode and enable it until the next key off cycle.

Some early model 03 SLs do not have dyno mode, my car is one of those examples. Strap her on the dyno and go.
