You cant, the buttons on the wheel only work when in "manual" mode... at least on my car.

UPDATE: this is only for 2003 model years...

Mine works in sport or comfort modes.

No, the left button will put it in first then the right button shifts it from 2,3,4,D. When driving the left will drop it 1 gear per push of the button.

03's had paddles that only functioned with the C/S/M mode in Manual. 04 and newer functioned regardless of mode selected.

It does not have manual, you mean auto overide.
If you select 4 th gear it will overide and start in 1st or 2nd.

Why do you even post? All your content is either pro SL63 or ripping on any 600/65 models? To top it off you're 600/65 info is always wrong

The AMG models do have Manual mode, but the 04-up NON AMG models do shift manually as well, NOT over ride like you describe, if I shift gear selector into say 4th then tap padles dwn a gear it indeed shifts directly to 3rd, I can see it listed in Instrument Cluster.

If I want, I can shift thru all 5 gears manually up & down all day long thru shifter buttons, left button upshifts & downshifts same w/right button. It'll even hit the rev limiter & stall until I upshift if I leave it in say 2nd & wind it out to 5700 rpm's

I never even mentioned the SL63, are you becoming paranoid!
Going on my experience my SL55 and my CL65 will change gear at the red line whether you want to or not, it will also not change down if it is too near
the red line. SL55 was 02 and CL65 was 04. However are you telling me that
a newer car with an auto box will just hit the limiter, and NOT change up.
On my car the left button was for down shift and the right for up shift.

Even the SL63 will hit the rev limiter in manual mode and not shift.

I realize this happens on a 63 because it has an MCT box, but an auto box has a torque converter so I can't see that proper manual mode can be achieved.
This is one that TMC-M5 could answer.

Does an auto box have proper manual mode?

So when you are in your E55 in manual mode, when it hits the red line the
rev limiter comes in to play, instead of changing gear. Is That right
