No, the left button will put it in first then the right button shifts it from 2,3,4,D. When driving the left will drop it 1 gear per push of the button.

The AMG models do have Manual mode, but the 04-up NON AMG models do shift manually as well, NOT over ride like you describe, if I shift gear selector into say 4th then tap padles dwn a gear it indeed shifts directly to 3rd, I can see it listed in Instrument Cluster.
If I want, I can shift thru all 5 gears manually up & down all day long thru shifter buttons, left button upshifts & downshifts same w/right button. It'll even hit the rev limiter & stall until I upshift if I leave it in say 2nd & wind it out to 5700 rpm's

Going on my experience my SL55 and my CL65 will change gear at the red line whether you want to or not, it will also not change down if it is too near
the red line. SL55 was 02 and CL65 was 04. However are you telling me that
a newer car with an auto box will just hit the limiter, and NOT change up.

On my car the left button was for down shift and the right for up shift.

This is one that TMC-M5 could answer.
Does an auto box have proper manual mode?
