Removing front bumper - R230
Ill try to describe a simple explination of the removal of the SL front bumper.
Jack front of car off ground
Remove front wheels
Remove forward front wheel well liners and left and right front undertray filler panels and center undertray panel. (Many small screws and nuts. )
Remove grill (4 screws on top of grill) slide back and up.
Remove 2 screws on top of bumper at both sides of the grill.
Remove front left and right mesh grills. Remove 2 nuts behind the grills.
From inside fender wells, remove screw facing up very near wheel well lip.
Grab metal clamp near the place the screw was and pull inward toward engine. Then pull the metal clamp out. It clamps the bumper lip and front fender lip togather.
Unplug parking sensor harness plug, drivers side strapped to bumper liner.
Unplug fog light plugs.
Temp sensor will pull away on its own, when bumper is removed.
Pull bumper straight forward and remove, carefull not to scratch against fender and other parts.
Assemble same way. Replace temp sensor after install.

Thanks for the instruction Okbarnett, from the pictures it look like you use the jackstand near the front of the car. can you show me exactly where jackstand should be placed? What about the jacking points behind the front wheels?

those stands are just against a frame or suspension member. I dont know where I put them.
you jack under the front (or rear) rubber bumpers for jacking

I tried pulling off my bumper last night, got the stuff all done aside from:
Remove front left and right mesh grills. Remove 2 nuts behind the grills.
and is "drivers side strapped to bumper liner" referring to the location of the connector for the park sensors?
I was removing it to try to get in behind to mount up hid fogs, which I did hook up for a test run, used the resistors that were supplied so no error lights, the one side I did was awesome for about 20 seconds, then I heard a loud pop and the resistor started smoking some horrible fumes that will probably give me some sort of cancer, not sure what happened there.

I dont know if there are nuts behing yours because I never tried to remove a standard bumper. If it wont come off, Id look there.
The parking harness does have a connector on the drivers side. but you should unplug it before you take the bumper off.
Your HID lights; I dont know what youve got. But the ones Ive used have a ballast, small metal box that the 12v will have to plug into. Your fog 12v will have to be used as the input for the ballast. Then the ballast feeds the HID bulbs. But There shouldnt be any problem with the load sensing a fault. there isnt a need for a resistor. I dont have any and theres no faults. Did the dealer you bought the lights from say you needed them?

i got them from hidextra.com, and they sent them and said I would need them on my 05 sl600. they are just an inline thing that is all covered in heat shrink wrapping.

OK thats the same as I have. The inline component isnt a resistor. It is a capacitor.
You either have one of two problems.
It could be a bad capacitor.
Or you have it wired in reverse. Are you sure you have the + and - 12v wires right?
Either way, its burned and you have to get another one.

the instructions wer fairly horrible so I'm not 100% sure, but I do have a couple extra capacitors as I haven't installed the high beams yet. do you have any notes on which wire on the factory plug is ground and which way you are supposed to plug it into the igniter box?

I cant tell you what you have on yours. Have to send picture, maybt not even then. . But you need to use a volt meter and see what is pos and neg. USUALLY the neg is some kind of brown .
But its not going to work unless you have the + and - right. then follow their picture instruction sheels.

I got a voltmeter, and that shouldn't be a big problem to figure out the 12v, but how do I know on the box which side is supposed to get the 12v, the instructions I received have pictures, but the resolution is horrible and I can't tell which is supposed to be which. I know on one of my cars I did HID's and I had the polarity wrong cuz the instructions were wrong.

I went to double check the instructions, and beneath the second box there was a read before installing instructions....I guess the moral of the story is empty out the whole box and all shipping media....I guess I'm out 8 bucks...

that part I get, but you can flip the harness going into the igniter to have either the red or black on top, I guess I can try to wire it up to a battery to figure it out.
