2006 SL55 Advice Needed

Hello all,

I am thinking about purchasing an 06 SL55 with about 7700 miles on it. The car has a clean car fax and the owner has provided the service records. The car is currently going through a scheduled maintenance. The car has about 6 months warranty left on it.

Looking at the service records I saw two things that are a little concerning to me.

At 5337 miles the car was brought in for service for the active body control. When the car was parked the left front suspension would drop all the way to the floor and the dash displays visit workshop. This issue was fixed under warranty by the dealer.

At 5372 miles the car was brought in because the top was inoperable. The mounting plates were replaced and the flaps were adjusted under warranty.

Are these typical problems?

Should I order an independent inspection report?

With 7700 miles on the car and only 6 months warranty left should I be concerned?

Thanks!

It's good that the ABC issue occurred before you (or someone else potentially bought it). ABC is known to be troublesome, although on newer models (2007+) it's getting much more reliable. If you can, I'd definitely get an extended warranty instead of riding off of the remaining 6 months.
A 2006 shouldn't typically be visiting the dealer very often either. Usually it's only the early SLs. If the 2 issues you mentioned were the only things that have gone wrong, I'd say the SL you're looking at sounds pretty good (although 5300 miles is pretty early for an ABC pump to go out, if I'm not mistaken, although I've had an Airmatic pump go out @ < 3000 miles).

You should be very concern, those two alone will cost you a lot of money to fix. My best advice to you is get the original owner to buy extended warranty before you purchase the car, so that it could be transfer to you. It is cheaper for him/her to buy it rather than you purchased the car and buy it.

My SL55 is in the shop right now being fix on the ABC and other stuffs. Thanks goodness for warranty.

These cars are not reliable or cheap to fix like Hondas. The ABC suspension on these cars is notorious for failures so having that repair is not uncommon. Get an extended warranty.

These machines are ment to be driven. Looks like this one has sat for a bit.
How long did it take the suspension to go soft?

Did he keep battery tenders on it the whole time? Might be time for a rear battery too.

Without a doubt, take it to a shop that knows SL55s and have it checked out. There are a ton of little gadgits that if not working can set you back (if you want them to work) The IR door sensors cost $500.00 ea to have repaired and both of mine went out. A sensor for the cabin AC went out and that repair was about $1000.00. Alarm horn went bad, AC hose leaking, brakes on the third set, IC pump out, both engine mounts replaced, both batteries replaced, Alternator problem, front end bushing on the r-side all this before 30K.

Good luck!

Your going from an accord to an 06 SL55? WTG dude!

06 SL55's will be right around 50k. Take a look at the auto trader.

Wholesale is around 46k.

Since yours has VERY low miles prepare to pay even more...plus it has the 030 package which is very rare.

Haha thanks FLSL55. I use to have a Porsche and a BMW but I travel a lot before and there was no point in keeping these cars in the garage depriciating and paying for insurance on it and not driving it. The Honda has been very reliable. Now I'm ready for some fun.

I like the Rx7s too.

You guys think 60k is paying too much for this 06 sl55?

Thanks again
