Buying 2007 SL55...a mistake??? HELP!

I need some help. I had a 2007 SL550 Designo w/ AMG wheels, etc. I totaled it. But loved it so musc sought out another just like it.

I found the same car, but a 2007 SL55. My concern is:

Is it a lot bouncier on rough road, and is the exhaust so much louder it's bothersome? I have loud sports cars (Challenge Stradale and an F430).

I saw the top gear review and listened to the exhaust on youtube. I'm concered as`I am supposed to send funds Monday.

This is my jell-out car. I want tunes and to talk to my girl.

FWIW I thought Mercedes were for lawyers and real estate agents. But the SL550 was perfect...what a car

It's not loud at all until you punch it, and then it's still not obtrusive. The ride quality is not bouncy. I just came out of an M6 and have had a bunch of Porsches, and it's barely what you would call firm. Besides, an SL55 is head and shoulders above an Sl in many areas, especially in performance. Drive them back to back, and you'll see what I mean. A regular SL, something I also considered before getting my 07 SL55, is anemic in comparison.

Thanks. Any more opinions?

here's a dumb question. The windscreen. Is it the same as the SL550? I don't remember the SL550 having a roll bar you could move up manually. Does that mean anything?

Also: I bought a painted AMG style rear spoiler from some after market place. Any ideas on where to get one?

Thanks again for your post. I was stressed out

Cheers

Kevin

You sound like you want an AMG with the wheels, spoiler, etc. There is no difference in certain cosmetics such as a roll bar. The SL55 is just TUNED better with certain differences in the front and rear fascia, side vet, etc. It's still a SL model. I think the above poster gave the perfect advice. Drive BOTH and make our decision.

I went from an SL500 to a SL55 and have never regretted it. As others have said, you just need to drive one.

I have owned the 2007 SL550 and just purchased a 2006 SL55. There is just no comparison between the two regarding performance. The SL55 is so much more fun to drive. The exhaust note is not distracting but can remind you how much more power you actually have. I wish I had just purchase the SL55 the first time.

Maybe you should consider an SL600?
Silky smooth V12 that you can barely hear running....

I don't mean to mock or deride anybody by saying this, but ask this question in an AMG forum, you will ALWAY get "The AMG is better". ha ha

You asked about ride quality and exhaust noise. The AMG is fantastic. But I think it does have a little rougher ride, and little more exhaust noise. My 600 has the AMG sport package and the AMG exterior. I like the smooth ride and low exhaust noise. Although I am thinking about giving it a little more throat (sounds like Grandma's grocery getter, but will kick a vette's a$$).

Good luck and enjoy your choice. MB rox!

+1. I love my SL55 but if you're looking for smooth and fast the SL600 is definitely worth a close look.

55 All the way

I have had minor issues with the top and my ABC(covered under warranty ) I will say that a chrysler service contract is a must.. I hit 120 last night and thought wow !!! I love mine and the rumble (exhaust) is just the sound that reminds you that it looks pretty ,but can still kill most out there..

Ferraris are fun, but after a few years it is ego and not much more. The BMW M3 is a better car than most anything, imho.

I loved my sl550 because it was a joy to drop the top and just cruise. I did received the SL55 and it is quite nice. It is a 2007, and has a 5 speed transmission. I thought they had 7 speed....

MB use the 7 speed mostly in their normally aspirated cars. The blown cars, SL55, SL600 and SL65 still use the 5 speed auto to handle the bigger torque numbers. Except the GL320 BlueTec (turbo) which also uses the 7 speed auto.
