2008 MB CLK Black Series
Considering buying a 05-07 SL65
I have had SL's amg in the past (03 and 06) SL55 and loved them. My current ride is MB CLK BS, completely different ride when compared to SL. Anyway, Auto Trader has a SL65 with 6,000 miles, silver/char interior, loaded for $75K. My question is this, I believe 05 was the first year for 65's and I know my first year 03 55 had many issues, getting back to my question, should I be looking at the 06 or 07's or is the 05 just as solid without any issues?
Thanks
Todd

I think the '05 SL65s are as solid as any other year SL65. They did not share any issues that I know of that were common to the first (2003) SL55s.
Hope that was the answer you were going for. I'd go for it, and just did

Haven't heard of any specific SL65-issues either.
But since the 2007 have a couple of changes, I would absolutely recommend that one!
At least I find them good to have, but I guess a lot of people don't even notice them...
And from what I've heard, from mod 2007 the SL's no longer have that ABC-issue, with clogging oil channels that can cost the shirt of your back, and then some...
Good luck!

I would feel just fine about purchasing a well cared for, issue free example from '05-newer without hesitation (all the same, minor changes in 2007 as mentioned above).
Go for it!

SL 65 AMG - owned 1 year
Only issues: car has 35K miles
1) Squeaking front brakes - not solved
2) Cracking noise when turning steering wheel at low speeds from under the car - solved via Star Maintenance Bulletin
Other than that car has been good..........

07 for sure. Nothing wrong with the earlier years though. I still prefer my BS to my SL. You're right about the ride and handling differences. BTW I'll sell you my 07 with performance package and CPO warranty good through Sept 29, 2011 and save you $10K. PM if you're interested.

IMHO the E39 is the best car BMW has manufactured to-date. I include the M5, 540i and 530i/528i in this group. I still like the styling and look twice whenever I see one on the road. A great car!
