TPMS Wheels on 03SL55?

Hi,

My 03 SL55 did not come with TPMS option on the 18" wheels. I am currently thinking about buying some SL55 19" AMG wheels /tires from a 2007 but they have TPMS on the wheels.

Is there anything I should worry about or will they just bolt right on?

Thanks!

Or, you can use them as is. I bought a set of '07 SL65 wheels and tires for my '05 SL55. My car has TPMS, but the sensors on the new wheels don't match up. The answer was to a) spend about $400 on new sensors or, b) turn off the TPMS. Since I've never had too much trouble recognizing a flat tire I opted for option 'b'. All is well. I've owned three cars with TPMS and they've been more trouble than help, by far. Rather typical of a government mandate........;-)

My car is a 2005. TPMS was optional in 05, so it's legal to disable it. I believe 2007 was the first year it became mandatory. Any MBZ dealer should be able to turn it off. Many won't out of liability concerns. Obviously if your car is new enough to make it.required ........you're stuck with it.

TPMS Wheels on 03SL55 - Any concerns?

Thanks for the replies, guys.

So to what I think I am hearing is that I will have no issues buying wheels that have TPMS sensors and putting them on my car even though my car does not have the TPMS system?

Do I need to immediately change to the black tire stems or can I do it at a later date?

Thanks.

I don't think you ever have to change them.

No reason to go through the trouble to remove them, unless you want to take them off and sell the tpms. Since your SL did not come with TPMS, it just will not monitor the sensors in your new wheel. For your SL, the tpms in the new wheels will simply act like a standard valve stem.

For those who are wondering, yes you can disable the tpms via SDS.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

James: Can you tell me how to disconnect TPMs via SDS please. I already spent hundreds by replacing them and still doesn't work. Thanks. swiftm001@yahoo.com
